I already have a Merkur 38C closed combed. Should I buy.

I already have a Merkur 38C closed combed. Should I buy a EJ DE89L or go for the open comb Joris which is around $166. I mean it has some great reviews and I have very good technique as well as soaps to make lather.

So basically what I am trying to decide is should I get another closed comb razor DE89L and also an open comb Joris or should I just skip the DE89L because it is similar to the Merkur 38C?

Any feedback in deciding would be great.


PS. If you guys have not tried a soap, try Godrej from India. You won't regret it.

If the Joris is what you want then go for it. However I will throw this idea out there, for $166 you can get quite a few vintage razors and play around with all different styles. A decent Gillette (with out a case and in need of a bit of love) can be had for under $10 I have even found some for $1. I would say play around with some vintage ones, an open comb, an adjustable, an SE, and any thing else you may find.

The Joris is WAY more aggressive a razor than the DE89. Basically on the Spectrum from a Tech to 2011 Muhle R41, the Jagger is next to the Tech, the Joris next to the R41.

This may or may not answer your question. I don't have a 38c to know how similar it is to the DE89, so I can't answer from that standpoint.

There are other OC razors that are milder and cheaper, both, than the Joris. The Joris razors do look awful nice, and people who love them seem to really love them. For me, I'd rather have a Tradere (for example) at the price you're talking about.

Get a slant and an open comb.

Gentlemen, I decided to order these below. I think this gives me a nice variety of razors in my collection plus the Merkur 38C I already have and Love.

What do you think? Some Wise choices I can't wait until these arrive. I am waiting as of right now like a 7 year old wanting his toys. hehe

I have all 3 (EJ89 which is the same head as the Muhle)) but not the 38C so I cannot give you comparison. I do have the 34C which is the same head as the 38C. The slant bar is my favourite followed by the Progress. The Fatip needs a little care to get even blade exposure. Enjoy!
