Hunting down 1/16" Brass Rod + washers. HELP PLEASE! :

Hi everyone.

I went to all my local hardware stores, as well as Home Depot, Michaels Craft store, Rona, Canadian Tire, Home Hardware, and anything in between. Most of these places didn't carry any brass rod or tiny washers. Canadian Tire and Home Depot had 1/8" but it's too big for my GD66's. I also do not have the proper tools to drill the hole to 1/8", so no need to mention that :001_tt2:

Getting to the point; where can I find 1/16" brass rod as well as washers that will fit it (i believe size #0)?

If I have to order them online, I will do that. I am desperate at this point. I can't finish my project and it's bugging the crap out of me :crying:

UPDATE: I ordered some 00 and 0 washers from Microfasteners. Still hunting down the brass rod. Preferably something in Canada would be great.

The size 0-80 brass bolts from microfasteners will work, I believe. Get the nuts, too. This is a good setup for temporary assembly. For permanent, you can simply round the corners of the nut and cut the bolt flush, or don't use a nut... cut the bolt to length and peen it just like rod.

Most hobby shops should have 1/16" brass rod. Model railroaders, etc use a lot of it.

Okay, so you can get 1/8" rod but you don't want to drill the holes bigger. That's okay... the hole is too small for the rod... to make them the same size you could make the hole bigger to match the rod, or you could make the rod smaller to match the hole! Cut a piece about 1" long. Chuck it in your drill. Pinch the rod between folds of sandpaper or against a fine file. Run the drill and let the drill do the work as you turn it down to 1/16" diameter or slightly oversize if you prefer. Sounds like a PITA I know, but if you are just doing one or two razors, no biggie.

FWIW many times I have taken a piece of scrap brass and made both pins and washers from it.

I've never thought of that! I think I'll give it a shot. Canadian Tire (basically a Canadian Rona/HomeDepot/Walmart all crammed into one) sells 1/8" brass rod for like 3 dollars for 3 feet of it. That'd make a lot of pins.

Have a look on ebay, you should be able to find some. If I recall correctly I paid about $7-10 for mine (4 long rods).

Got some off amazon. I also found it in a hobby shop that carries a lot of radio controlled cars and airplanes as well as model trains.

Maggard Razors sells "kits" of pins, washers, and pivot washers for a reasonable price for the guy wanting to do a couple razors...

Unfortunately, He doesn't offer 1/16th brass rod + washers :crying:

Oh well. I think I'm going to take Slash's advice and grab some 3/16ths (if it's in stock) or 1/8ths brass rod from Canadian Tire/Home Depot, crimp it in a drill, and take the sandpaper to it until I get it small enough to fit into the 1/16th's hole on my GD66's.

Brass nails - I think 14 ga. I'm guessing - check the gauge before buying.

Ebay has a few sellers with that rod for sale all the time.
Try Imperial Shave too - email them if it's not on their site.
Heimerdinger cutlery is another source. Jantz supply too.

Check out any decent engineering places where they braze! Brazing rods come in all sizes and you shouldn't have any issue finding what you need.

Don't bother trying to find brazing rod, it's expensive. You'll get the best deal on bar stock at any knife making store online. Microfasteners is best for price as well.
