Huge "He-Man" razor?!

At least I think that was the brand name - an antique safety razor, the head of which had to be nearly 2x as wide as the head on the usual razor. I think it was called He-Man or some such. Did not buy it, tho it was dirt cheap - wouldn't trust myself with it even if blades are available. It was very strange to see, is the only reason I mention it. But I have to ask: anyone ever use one?

Well currently there's the Cobra Classic which uses Feather Professional blades typically used in their faux straight razor line:

Several decades ago, Durham Duplex, known mainly for their replaceable blade, safety combed straights made a wide safety razor that used their slotted hole blade:

I have a feeling that neither of these is what you're thinking of though.

I'm not sure - I know Durham-Duplex was a name I saw on an enclosed instruction sheet today, and may well have been with that very razor. The old one in your pic is definitely it, though, or one nearly identical.

Well then, that's it. I have one. They show up from time to time and they're not generally expensive.

There's only one drawback:

The blades they use are now mostly sold for carpet cutters, so you have to go to Home Depot or Lowes, then get up the courage to shave with it.

The blades look like these:

Do you just collect them, or have you actually used it to shave? Being so wide, how can it not lop something off?

Is a Durham Duplex straight worth picking up for about $5 (with case)?

I wouldn't count on being able to resell it. If you want it, buy it. $5 seems pretty reasonable. Most come with just the safety comb. If you're lucky it also has a "stropping attachment" that would go in place of the safety comb to allow stropping of the blade *or* using the razor very much like an unprotected straight.

I don't collect anything just to collect it, and I try not to own more than one of anything. That being said, I haven't gotten around to trying either of the Durham Duplexes (safety razor or quasi-straight razor). I'm still working my way through the DE, SE, injector, auto-strop and Rolls razor(s) that I acquired at the fever pitch of my RAD.

But I do intend to get there.

It's no wider than a straight razor edge. There are ways of working around it.
