Hubbys' Christmas?

Hello Gentlemen,

I think I've narrowed it down for my husband's Christmas presents. I'd like your opinions and/or advice before I place my orders.

Forest Green Rubber Shaving Mug - so he won't drop it and break it or my sink!

What do you guys think? Am I missing something? Would you suggest any alternatives?

A small ramekin or similar container to put the soap in might be a nice touch.

The VDH soaps can be melted to fit and stick when the time comes.

+1 on this. You can find them at Target very reasonably priced. I think they are around $4. While I completely understand the practicality of the rubber mug, I'm not so sure I'm digging that idea. Do you know if you can let it sit in hot water without it getting softer? Most guys fill a sink with hot water and let the mug and brush soak for a couple of minutes to let them warm up.

Since you're already ordering nicer equipment for him, I would skip the VDH and substitute something that you can't pick up at any Walmart.

Good point, and I feel off that I didn't think of that. I do the same, so why wouldn't he? I'll just get him a nice bowl/mug and threaten him within an inch of his life if he damages my sinks (again!) in any way.

I like most of your choices. The only one I would consider changing would be the rubber mug. How about a nice Moss or Georgetown scuttle?

I would say she should buy him a nicer soap in addition to the VDH, not instead of.

VDH is a nice baseline to compare other soaps against. If a product cost 20X more, but there is little gain in the way of performance, one would have to question if the extra money spent is really worth it.

Buy him a couple of really nicely scented pucks from Prairie Creations which is a top quality, but not hugely expensive, soap.

It's useful to remember the following when comparing soaps:

The difference in quality between a budget minded shaving cream/soap, and a high end expensive shaving cream/soap is not that great.

When examining ingredients of soaps/ shaving creams that work well for shaving, they are going to be remarkably similar.

An increase in price, doesn't seem to result in a proportional increase in quality; paying 50 times more for a soap, doesn't mean it will perform 50 times better.

There is a point in pricing, where you are no longer paying for an increase in performance, but are instead paying for the prestige of the brand name, and for a unique scent.

Sounds like a very good present!

+1 on the ramekin

Since you're picking him up a sampler of TOBS creams, you may want to try a sampler of soaps from one of the great soap purveyors around B&B, like Prairie Creations, Saint Charles Shave, Mama Bear, Honeybee Spa or others.

I recommend the Target brand latte mugs from...Target. I use one. It is large enough for a good lather bowl, nice and sturdy without being too heavy, and the handle helps when you are making lather. All for around $5.

Since you are in Houston, you might take a trip to The British Isles (http://britishislesonline.com/) on Rice Blvd not far from Kirby or check out Life Check Drugs next to the Rice Epicurean market near S. Post Oak and San Felipe. Both of those stores have a variety of items in stock that you can check out.

That would be very convenient as I work off of North Post Oak Road and Memorial... trouble is Hubby and I carpool and he keeps the car. Maybe I can sneak off during lunch on Tuesday when he takes his own car to a doctor's appointment...Hmmm

Where are you getting your blade sampler? If you are ordering it from Westcoastshaving, I'd say skip the cream sampler and VDH, and go for a good triple-milled soap (tabac or whichever DR Harris scent appeals.)

If you have any wiggle-room left on your budget, see if you can swing a good aftershave splash ... Musgo Real or Speick.
