How should I clean a 40's Gillette Aristocrat?

Hi Guys,
My brother just purchased a very clean 1940's Aristocrat on the bay. I have one as well and made the mistake of boiling the lacquer away. Big mistake, I know, but not much I can do about it now except for save my bro from making the same mistake! I found the wiki on safety razor maintenance :

http://wiki.badgerandblade.com/index.php/Safety_Razor_Maintenance#Cleaning_Safety_Razors

...but there isn't really any detailed process for cleaning a gold razor with a lacquer finish. It just says to care for it as jewelry, but that doesn't give any details of the process or products that would either work or would destroy the finish. Are the products mentioned in the wiki safe for the finish, minus the polishes? Can anyone offer some advice?
Thanks guys!

The lacquer is very easy to remove so soap and water are your safest bet. You can also probably use scrubbing bubbles cleaner or an equivalent. My Aristocrats almost all have the lacquer gone so I use the above and sometimes a gentle limited use of a nonabrasive polish or jewelry cleaner. Just be aware the unlacquered gold wears very easily.

I love these razors by the way!
