What's new

how many uses do you get out of your blade and what kind of blade?

I use Astra SP blades and they do the job well for me. i'll likely purchase a sample pack of blades next since the Astra is all i've used so far. Im wondering tho how many shaves you all get per blade? im sure there a lot of variables. as for myself i only use one blade one time. i replace it after one shave. i guess it does seem like a lot of waste. but my logic is that they are so cheap compared to cartridge razors (i just switched last year) why would i subject my face to a blade that has been used 2 or 3 times? i do make 2 passes on my face. i just think that using the same blade more than once would cause the quality of the shave to diminish and who wants anything but the perfect shave every time?

IMHO

thoughts?

i shave 6 days per week and replace blades on sunday and wednesday....so i get 3 shaves per blade.
could probably do more but they are cheap enough so why bother.

YMMV.

For me - very thick stubble, 2-passes per shave:

Astra SP - 1-2 shaves and done
Polsilver SI - 3-4 shaves and done

These are my blades of choice that I use almost exclusively, so I defer comment on blades that I use less often. I don't mind tossing an Astra SP after 1 shave either - at $0.09 per shave I'm not too concerned. I usually keep the Polsilver SI in for 3 shaves which works out to $0.12 per shave.

The financial burden of wet-shaving is not dependent upon blades ... it's the supporting cast that ADd$ up!

I use Feathers & Red Personnas and I usually get 3-4 shaves out of each.

I've found the Feather's quality drops off very quickly after 3 or 4 shaves.

Because they are usually just as good on the 2nd and 3rd shave, and sometime the best shave is the second one.

Yes, blades are cheap. If use use a blade that costs 10¢ each and shave every day, the blades cost you $36.50/year. If you use them for 3 days before tossing, you'll pay just $12.17/year, saving you $24.33 which is enough to buy a case of quality micro-brew. I don't about you, but if I had the choice of spending $36.50 for blades each year, or $36.50 for blades and one case of excellent micro-brew (without compromising shave quality), I'm going for the beer option every time.

very interesting. now this brings me to my next question. on the Astra SP in the corners is a 1 and a 2 and then on the other side is a 3 and a 4. is this because they expect you to flip the blade over for your next shave?

Main blades are Gillette Silver Blue, Gillette 7 O'clock blacks, & Personna Meds...3-4 great shaves from each.

One thing to keep in mind, some blades are better on the second shave.

The numbers are only for quality control and has no use for shaving.

you break it down very well. i've never thought about it like that.

Generic Personna (the kind Walgreen's sells) or Wilkinson Sword (sold at the local WalMart). One blade will usually last me a full week (7 daily shaves) but there have been the occasional flyers that last only 4 or 5 days and the occasional Wilkinson Sword that I can push to 8-10 uses.

this really made me say "wow" out loud. 7 shaves on one blade! i feel like i am just throwing money away.....again

As you can imagine, it is all extremely variable. Only you can really determine when a blade has hit the end of it's good shaves life for you. Your face will let you know, there's no doubt to that. lol

I got a great Astra SP shave this morning. It was the sixth shave. I'll use it tomorrow, too. I have a moderate beard. I can't get a single pass from a Derby. I get 3-4 from Crystals, Personnas, Israelis, Feathers, and Wal-mart Wilkies.

I'm new to DE shaving and so far I'm using a Derby with 5 shaves on it and it's still shaving great! I'm planning on seeing how far I can go with it, so then I'll know the max for this blade. That being said I only shave once every 5 days and I have a light beard.

SuperMax SP: I change it after 3 or 4 shaves; but it could use it for 5 or 6 shaves but with sensitive skin I'll take three DFSs and not push it.

Astra SP: Astra improves after the first shave, so I would use one blade for 5 shaves. That's five good to DFSs.

I will perform two to three passes and pickups per shave.Lately I've been using SuperMax SP blades exclusively--they are that good.
