What's new

How many razors do you keep in your rotation?

How many razors are actively in your rotation?

  • One lone warrior

  • Two, they have to operate as a pair

  • Three, after all three's company

  • Four, because it's a nice round number

  • Five, gives me one for each day of a work week

  • Six, because on the seventh day they rest

  • Seven because I need one for each day of the week...Really!

  • Eight, let's face it eight is great

  • Nine because I'm working my way up to a massive addiction

  • Ten because I'm addicted

  • Eleven, I've tried a twelve step program and it just didn't work

  • Twelve or more because that's all we can list as a poll

Since I'm having a bit of RAD I figured I'd get a feel for how bad some of you guys also have it .

While you're at it feel free to throw in how many you have that aren't on active duty as well.

Randomly 7 because that is how many I like. It is not an attempt to do one per day of the week. I have 12 in my collection.

I keep four on active rotation at the moment, each paired with a specific blade, and selected for use depending on how many days worth of stubble I need to harvest.

Merkur 34G+Derby = 1 day (also my travel razor)
Progress/Pureslab knob + AstraSP = 2 days
SledgehammerSlant+Feather = 3 or more days

rounding out the rotation is a hybrid. HeavyBullMastiff handle with a Stahly head. I haven't got a blade set in concrete for this one, but I'm leaning toward Derby, and I alternate using this one with the 34G to take on 1 and 2 day stubble.

I haven't counted the rest of my collection lately, but I'd estimate about 2 dozen razors that are not used at all. Mostly Gillettes, a few GEMs, a couple of injectors, and oddball stuff like a Rolls.

I have three all of them vintage Gillettes.

My daily is a 54 SuperSpeed.
I also have a 40's Tech and a Slim Adjustable. Have not used the Slim yet still practicing technique with the SS.

Workhorse: 34C

Travel: Travel Tech

On Standby: Ball end Tech

For other duty (back of neck): Atra Plus

So I voted (1).

For about the first 7 months I rotated 4 DE's, but the last 5 months it's only been one - the Merkur 34G. I haven't totally ruled out bringing the '52 SS and '59 Tech back into some occasional use, but for now I'm happy with the Merkur. At one point I had about 15 DE's, but most of my "had to haves" turned out to be a disappointment.

I have around 25 razors and without the double/triple ones there are about 16 different ones that are all in use. I must admit some get far more use than others though.

I just don't have razors in rotation. I have six different rotations with different razors in the rotations. I have been trying to get a better understanding/feel for the shaving variations within certain kinds of razors.

(1) Right now I am concentrating on Gillette SS Adjustibles: I have been rotating a, Gillette Fatboy, a SS adjustible (Slim), a SS Adjustible/long black handle, and a short black handle/SS Adjustible. I will shave with the Fatboy this morning.

(2) Murker razors: 23C, 33C, 34C (HD)and a Futur.

(3) Gillette Super Speeds: A 1941 Ranger Tech, Several late 40's and 50's SS. A Red Tip, A Blue tip, a Black tip and Standard Super Speeds. I shaved with the Ranger Tech for a week, but it is in such great condition I took it out of the SS rotation when I found it shaved almost exactly the same as my 40's SS. I had a black handled SS that was very mild, but I PIFed it to a young man in Oregon. I also have Weishi, Gun Metal SS that I keep in my travel kit.

(4) GEM and Ever-Ready 1912 razors. A GEM G-bar, A 1924 Ever-Ready and a cased GEM Travel razor. I tried the Micro Matics and a 1924 Ever-Ready but they were just to aggressive for my face. I sold them. I have since picked up another very good condition 1924 that I plan to try it again in the future when I get back to my SE rotation. If I ever find a Lather Catcher at a reasonable price I would like to try one of them.

(5) Standard Gillette Techs, Fat handled Techs and a Feather Portable.

(6) Edwin Jagger Chrome Chatsworth and DE89L.

My goal is to understand throughly the different characteristics of the razors I own. I have not tried any of the Pils, Feather or high end Gillettes. I have a Gillette, Gold Sheraton in the case, that is in fine condition, that I will not shave with. I just picked up a Gillette, no date code, 40's SS in the case. This razor appears almost new condition and since I have several others I will not shave with it.

As I see it, the only real problem I have is finding the time and shaves to test and retest my rotation razors. After all, I only shave once a day. I tried shaving twice a day to squeeze in more shaves, but my face did not like it.

I have whittled my rotation down to 4. 38m is the daily workhorse, cant part with my 33c(first razor) even though it is the same head as the 38 it is milder, 1980 Super Adjustable (only till I find an 81) and Gem G-bar for variety.

I have two in use right now: a super speed and a merkur hd 34c. I loaned another super speed to my brother to try to get him interested in de shaving.

Here is my current rotation:

Slim adjustable
FB
Mergress
Mergress XL

I guess I just like adjustables.

Sitting in a drawer are: a Tech and Knack.

Wow! I'm really surprised at the weighting toward few razors given the RAD symptoms running rampant on these boards...

I am guilty of being at the other end. But I'm still a relative new guy. I could see whittling it down to 3 or 4 after I've experimented enough.

But one? I guess I'm not the marrying type.
