How does SWMBO feel about your Nib AD?

So, tonight after practicing with a dip pen for a couple hours, the wife tells me that "calligraphy" is her LEAST favorite of my "hobbies" because it occupies the most of my time. She then went on to list each and every one of my hobbies, and the tone she used just made them sound.....dirty. I was indignant to say the least and vehemently defended each and every one of my AD's. The thing is she's right, lol. Of course I didn't admit that..jeez.

My first real AD, was Swedish snus, but I used that to quit smoking cigarettes. Then turned that into a business that has done very well for my family. So, she's okay with that one.

Then there was/is wet shaving. This one is still ongoing so to speak, because I do still shave everyday and occasionally buy software or blades, when needed. Honestly, I have saved money with this one. So, she's okay with this one.

Then there's fragrance...ongoing. I've always been somewhat of a fragrance whore though, now they're just more expensive. She's not that "okay" with this one, but tolerates it because I buy decants and sometimes make a little money (that i spend on other AD's) selling decants, etc.

Then there's pipes and pipe tobacco. She loathes this one, lol. she's a non-smoker and has always hated me smoking anything. My argument is that I'm in the tobacco business and our company makes good money on pipes and pipe tobacco...besides, I'm not inhaling this smoke like I did cigarette smoke.

Then there's fountain pens *sighs*....I've always loved pens, and only a year or so ago got into fountain pens. I went through (still going through) a phase where I was buying all sorts of pens, old, new and in between. Then I sort of settled in and stopped buying pens, even sold some that I wasn't using. Until I let James drag me into that freakin' calligraphy thread, LMAO. Now, it's full speed ahead for all things calligraphy.

I feel I should explain my psychosis a little. Whenever I get interested in something, I go headlong into it until I've learned all there is to know about the subject. Did it with snus, and BAM...started a business and turned it into something great. Wet shaving is the one exception to this rule. I learned all I could, decided what worked for me and settled into what I love. I have a few razors and one boar brush and one nice Simpson and a couple shave creams. Fragrances, read all I could on them, learned all I could and then moved on.
There's a pattern emerging here..ahahaha. My beloved wife, best friend and mother of my kids....called me on it too.

Our conversation this evening ended with ther saying with a chuckle "I suppose I should just embrace this one too, because it could be hookers and booze". She kissed me on my head and went and baked some cookies. They were good, too ;-)

So, how does your bride view your pen, ink, paper feti...errr...I mean hobby?

My girlfriend usually tries to jump in on all of my AD's. When it comes to wet shaving, she like to use software products made by some of the same brand. (we both share a love with all things nancy boy). She has even enabled one of her female friends to take up DE shaving for her legs.
She saw me using a fountain pen, and jumped head first into it with me also.

The only real AD she doesn't approve of, everything and all things smoking. She tolerates it but prefers me not to smoke for health reasons.

My wife is confident in the assumption that I know how to balance between disposable income & necessities.

Only thing is I have to actually learn to distinguish between the two. This part she doesn't know .

In our collection, most of the John Hollands, all of the ring tops, and the Namiki limited-edition Panda and White Tiger are my wife's. This probably accounts for about a fifth of our collection.

Well, my wife has never made me cookies after an "AD" conversation... so at least you've got that going for you. But because of the kindness of others, and some thriftiness on my part, I haven't really [yet] begun to drop big cash on purchases. My disorders started with coffee, and, as my birthday is this friday (and she benefits from this particular disorder), I'll be receiving a much needed Baratza Encore grinder this weekend (I wanted the Preciso, but like I said... I'm thrifty).

Now I'm really wanting a great pen, either a vintage Pelikan (200 or 400), Parker 51, or the B&B Essential... we'll see...

Well I'm single, so I don't have to justify my ADs or worry about stuff going MIA because someone decided that they like the AD too :p

Now half as wise
She usually just shakes her head and smiles. She works under the premise "Better the mistress I know than the one I don't", sorta like "Better than hookers and booze"

Same here. "Hookers and booze" does have a certain ring to it, though

My wife has been pretty understanding and tolerant...as long as I keep it within limits. Maintaining fiscal restraint isn't the easiest task around all you enablers!

Actually, she's been bitten by the bug also, although she's specializing in ballpoints and mechanical pencils. Don't think that it's just fountain pens that cost the big bucks! :scared:

My girlfriend's fine with it. She got me started in 2005. Well, "fine" may not be the right word. She's supportive of it and realizes it's cheaper than auto racing or classic car restoration.

I also suffer from the get interested in X, learn a lot about X, then move on to Y. Outdoor sports (mountain biking/snowboarding/backpacking/hiking/running) and fountain pens are the things I've really stuck with. I've found what I like, so I'm sticking to that now, instead of acquiring new hobbies. That said, I would like to get into drawing or watercolor painting. I don't know if I have the patience, though.

I'd suggest taking a watercolor class at an adult school or something similar. I'm currently enrolled in one, and I couldn't imagine being able to do it without someone showing me the techniques firsthand. It's one of the most difficult mediums for painting.

my wife thinks I am crazy, actually i told her she couldnt use my FP, and she stormed offed cursing my name. yea it wasn't pretty.

I'm thinking of getting my wife and I each a Parker 21 that would just need some cosmetic touching up. Need to gauge if she'd be interested. Whenever she writes with one of my pens I tend to lose it for a few days, then I dig in her purse to find it. :)

It's funny because whenever my wife asks me to borrow a pen it usually goes something like this, "Hey, do you have a NORMAL pen that I can borrow?" I promptly hand her my TWSBI (because let's face it, I don't care if she breaks it) to use and she says, "NOOOO, a regular pen, not a fancy pen." My reply is simple...this is a regular pen, Darling...people have been writing with them for ages ;-). Then she stomps off cursing under her breath, lol. She really doesn't ask anymore, a few times of this and she was conditioned...ahaha

I've been like this my entire life, but I tell myself that's why I'm so interesting ;-) And honestly, there's probably some truth to it, because if you're well versed in many disciplines...it makes for good conversation, lol. I sketch quite a bit, nothing too grand, but I'm more than proficient at it. I tried dabbling in painting, that's what it amounted to...dabbling. I intend to "take it to the next level" this coming winter though. If you do take classes, show us some of your work as it progresses, that would be great.
