What's new

How can I say this nicely.

Does anyone else out there not give a damn about ingredients of shave products? Now allow me to explain:

I don't mean looking for tallow as a sign of a good soap,
And I don't mean avoiding lanolin because you KNOW you have a sensitivity to it,

I mean looking at an ingredient list and saying "Oh scary, my face won't like that!" without even trying it (because of some boogeyman ingredient).

My point is,
you say: SLS, SLES
I say: ***

If it works, I use it.

If it works well, I really use it.

If it works I use it. But I could take issue with your "Tallow as a sign of a good soap". Just as there are good non-tallow soaps, I'm sure there are some crappy tallow soaps.

Tony, I agree. I just wanted to differentiate between looking at an ingredient list for tallow, versus other "chemical" ingredients.

Well in general I'd prefer an ingredient list that didn't look like someon'e chemistry PhD thesis, but if it works, it works.

I don't really read the ingredients in my shaving stuff, but if someone else wants to, that's their business.

I used to feel that way, then I looked up the ingredients in my Barbasol shaving cream the other day.

Just because people occasionally overreact and fearmonger doesn't mean there aren't unnecessarily / potentially harmful chemicals in some products, and potential carcinogens/allergens/irritants aren't always just "boogeyman ingredients."

Propane, butane, antifreeze, carcinogens and hormone disrupters don't really need to be occupying space on my toiletry shelf when alternative products are readily available. YMMV.

That said, it all depends on what you're looking for in a shaving product. If you just want an adequate shave at a particular price point, then this stuff may be fine. If, on the other hand, you want to feel like you're buying a high quality product and supporting small artisans and not the petrochemical industry, well, the vendor / hobbyist threads have numerous options for you to choose from.

The only think I'm particular about these days is my shampoo.
I end up with problems if I use shampoos with SLS or EDTA or one of those two.

I go with what works for shaving.

I try to keep myself in shape and always have. I think that at age 56 I look pretty good even if I do say so myself :001_smile

I was a trained fighter for many years so my nose has been broken a few times and I have a scar or two that are barely visible these days. People say I look mean, but I think I look good and if I weren't married the ladies would be all over me! :001_tt1:

But here's the thing, kidding aside. I try to keep myself healthy, looking healthy and staying young looking. I eat right and I groom myself well. I also try to dress decent. It's bad enough I have to search for food that isn't made in some lab somewhere and full of junk I never heard of, chemicals included, I don't need to be loading the outside of my body with unknowns either. I look to cut the chemical overload.

Like I said, I think I look pretty good and I work at it. Why get everything else right but have my face and skin looking like a catchers mit when I'm 65? Believe me when I tell you. At 65 I will still be proud to take my shirt off and I know I'll still drop and give you 100 pushups. My face needs to match brother :wink2:

It's funny how people will only use the best stuff on their cars or in their cars. But as for their body's.....whatever.

Good for you I used to work out quite a lot also. Until I got got a bad back with all kinds of problems and weight training was out for me. I was crushed I just gave up. Keep on keeping on.

Emanon, somewhere in your third paragraph you allude to another thesis entirely, a whole other can of beans.

The idea that inspired this thread was shave-centric.

Yes, I understand and that was my point. You asked if anyone looks at ingredients and says "oh my face won't like that." I'm saying my face doesn't like a laundry list of ingredients. I try to minimize that. :001_smile But I was giving the reason why I don't like many ingredients.

But maybe I'm misunderstanding the OP. (?)

Hm... why don't you tell us how you really feel about your appearance. :001_tt2:

(kidding! I hope I can say the same things when I'm 50+)

SLS and the like are different than saying you prefer tallow soaps. People have reactions to SLS, others fear of it causing cancer and such. It's irrelevant how well an item may work if the person doesn't want to use the product based on an ingredient. For example, tallow soaps may work great. A vegan may wish to pursue other options. So, yes, you may be the only one that doesn't care... People have reasons for caring more often than not caring.

Then I'm really misunderstanding.

Here is a quote from your OP.

I mean looking at an ingredient list and saying "Oh scary, my face won't like that!" without even trying it (because of some boogeyman ingredient).

So I raise my hand and say "I do, I do!" And I explain why I don't like the "boogeyman" ingredient (s)

:confused1

+1

I'm the same as JBLA and Emanon. It's all about choices, so if a shaving product works for you, and you don't care what's in it, as long as it works, that's great.

For myself, I don't give in to fear-mongering, but it's about informed decisions. Go out and find the research yourself if you're unsure, but there's nothing wrong with some folks wanting to stay away from carcinogens, chemicals that are irritants or contribute to organ / system toxicity.

I know people that eat greasy fast food every meal of the week, and they're quite happy. Good for them. I know others that can't stomach it. :)

It's about choices. If someone likes the purity and performance of high-quality Shaving Soaps (with no harmful chemicals) like Martin de Candre, Mike's Natural Soaps or Mystic Water, are you going to begrudge them their choice?

Ultimately, it looks like there are a ton of shaving products fitting everyone's needs. That's wonderful for all. :001_smile
