How big is your sssssscutlle?

Sorry, I just don't know how to ask another guy that. Har har har.

Seriously though, I am normally a mug lather kinda guy. When I got to different soaps and would load and lather, I would just naturally reach for another mug. So I got fancy and got a bigger soup mug from the thrift store (where else?). Now I notice when I use a bigger scuttle, the lather gets light and airey, but in the smaller mug, it stays thicker and way more rich. I am sure my water/whip time ratio isn't that far off, but I think the smaller mug makes a difference.

What say you?

I say it depends on what I am trying to achieve that shave. If I am in a hurry and just want to get down to business, I will use my plastic Marvy barber's mug. If I have some "me" time, and the better half, and little one are out....I break out my Dirty bird 1.5, and go through the motions of heating up the scuttle - while I soak the brush, and shower.

I guess it just depends on what time allows. Nothing wrong with both. The plastic mug is also great for a shower shave. Especially if you accidentally drop it. No worries there.

Regards,

Brad

I've only had one, my Robert Becker medium. I love it and use it every shave. I like it so well, I just ordered a matching mug with lid from R. Becker.

I had a Schwarzweisskeramik XL but sold it, to big, especially if you use brushes with rather short handles on them, I now have a Small one and it's much better.

I have both the G5 and G20 scuttles from Georgetown pottery.

I pick one of them based on what brush I am going to use that day

Holy smokes turtle, that mug is huge. Does your lather change consistancy depending on how big or small the scuttle you are using?

So do you find a difference in the quality of the lather from the smaller to the larger scuttle? It seems you're in a perfect position to answer the question as you have virtually the same scuttle in two sizes.

I size/choose the scuttle based on the size of the brush I am using. Other than the extra room for the larger knots there is little to no difference in the lather that is made by either size scuttle.

I don't have any problems making fantastic lather from my scuttle - and it is the large Robert Becker scuttle. $Becker scuttle.jpg

My Robert Becker holds a full quart of hot water (its a #8). The lather bowl is wide and shallow. Just the way I like it. Loving my RB scuttle.

I use a home made solution. I bought a cylindrical ceramic container that has about a gallon capacity and a larger cereal bowl that fits well into the top. I will try to get a picture if a can remember when I get home. I saw them next to each other at Big Lots and thought it would be a cheap way to try out warm lather before investing in a good scuttle. The total cost was about $10-12. It works great for me. I make my lather in a different bowl and then transfer it into the warm bowl. The biggest problem is that I have to put over two quarts of very hot water into it for it to be ready by the end of my shower.
