Hollow handle

I picked up a stanhome brush and popped the knot out to find out it is hollow. What's the best way to set a new knot in a hollow brush handle? And, what do I need to clean it up a bit?

I have on occasion used a cork or wood dowel cut to size to fill in the hollow space and give my knot a platform. Glue in with epoxy.

Cheers!

I fill mine with Durhams water putty, and put a small coat of epoxy over the top of that to seal it. I leave it lower than I need, then set the knot depth after it cures with pennies/dimes and epoxy. I just don't want to fill the entire handle with epoxy when it isn't required and there are less expensive ways to do it.

I can't remember exactly what I put inside this one, but I think I used a couple of metal washers and Devcon 5 minute epoxy to build it up, let it set, then set the knot with just a little more epoxy. I used only a toothbrush and soap to clean it, then some Turtle Wax polishing compound to shine it up a little.

This has become my most used brush.

What knot do you have planned?

I was looking at the 20mm finest XH from TGN. I still have some left over epoxy to remove. I have that exact handle. What size did you put in yours?

That's a $5 WoodCraft 20mm pure badger. I used it figuring that I could toss it if I didn't like it. I got the handle as part of a lot and wasn't enamored with it. Turns out it is a great brush with the loft set on the high side to minimize the scritch factor. I'd drfinitely go lower, maybe 50mm, with that Finest XH knot. That'll be a great feeling and performing brush!

This handle came in with an os mug. I figured I'd take a stab at re-knotting it. Thanks for the advice

Sure. Looking forward to the end product!

Apparently these brushes came with an open sided stand...

I put two part epoxy and a couple BBs for weight in the mix. I like to leave a couple BBs higher in the mix so the entire brush sinks in hot water while I take my shower. The first one I made only had BBs in the bottom and the hair floated whenever I let it soak.

Just set my knot. 20mm finest from TGN. Set the loft at 49mm. Filled the handle with a cork and a couple pennies. Used perma oxy 5 min epoxy.

Here's the bloom. Did a couple practice lathers and it did great. First with mama bears ye ole barbershop. The brush loaded much easier than my tweezerman and in less time. Face lathering was an experience. I can't believe how soft the tips are. I did one practice bowl lather with some arko cream and that turned out pretty good. I'm not a big fan of bowl lathering.

Looks perfect!

Wow. I wonder if this thread caused the bidding to go wild on this same brush on eBay. Over $20 now...
