Hi guys!

Just joined the forums and was looking for a little advice!!

Up until about 2 weeks ago I was using an electric shaver but due to some stubborn areas recently changed to a wet shave!

First time I butchered my face trying to shave against the grain putting me off slightly but gave it ago again and got it right and it was quite enjoyable!

To shave I am currently using Gillette Shaving Foam and Gillette 2 bladed disposable razors!

My question is, would I be better off with a Mach 3 turbo? I mean are they really much better? Also I’ve noticed some really fancy blades some of you guys are using, are these even better than the heavily marketed multi-bladed shavers?!

Thanks for any advice in advance! Something tells me I have a lot to learn!! :w00t:

welcome.

your shaves will get better if you use a DE or straight and a brush/cream.

will it be better with a mach3? NO!
is the marketing hype? YES!

If you're dead-set on using a cartridge razor then I'd recommend the Mach 3 over the Fusion. But you owe it to yourself to check out the double edge scene. Check your local antique shops and flea markets for deals. Old Gillettes can be found pretty cheap. And there's always Ebay.

But regardless of the razor you choose, I'd HIGHLY recommend that you get and use a good shaving soap/cream & brush. Using these helps further prep your beard which leads to smoother and more comfortable shaves. Where are you located? If you're in the US, check out any Bath & Body Works for CO Bigelow shaving cream. Some of the best available this side of the Atlantic! Also, many health/whole food stores carry the "Kiss My Face" line. It's good too though I prefer the Bigelow cream. Crabtree & Evelyn stores carry a men's shaving line and if you have one near would be worth checking out. And don't forget your local drug stores which should have Williams and/or Van Der Hagen shave soaps available.

Good luck!

couple of thoughts from a fellow noob...

* I've been shaving in the shower for years with a Mach 3/Fusion. get a shower mirror at Wally and try shaving in the shower. it works. bring a badger brush and some real shaving soap in the shower with you and you can get a decent shave. not a great shave but a decent shave. I think it's the hot water/steam of the shower.

* I recently converted to DE (double edge safety razor) shaving because the cartridges for the Fusions are more than $3 a pop and you really ought to replace them weekly (if not sooner).

* once I shaved with a DE I knew I'd never go back. what I thought was a decent shave was a miserable shave. a DE shave - wow. and I'm a noob. wait till my technique gets better!

What Mark said. You can definitely use a cartridge if you so desire. There are some on here that do indeed do that, even with all the cartridge bashing that goes on here. However, do yourself a favor and get a brush and some good shaving cream or soap. Williams and Van Der Hagen soaps, or Kiss My Face, The Real Shaving Company, and C.O. Bigelow shaving creams would all be good places to start and they should be locally available.
