What's new

Hey guys. Found a decent score.

Normally I don't venture into the Provence of straight edge razors but a local ad caught my eye. The gent wanted $75 but was eventually let go for $40. Couldn't pass that up. So the razors you see opened I think 17 are in need of TLC but to remove light rust but the blades are not chipped. There is one in particular that is really heavy. Couple W&B in there mixed with others that I need to make a list of. Looks like I'll need to learn how to sand and get them up to snuff. Maybe.

The closed ones are shot hut the scales are salvageable.

As a bonus I did pick up a nice ABC empire set(I think) and a cool German oc travel razor. Oh and a single edge VIC razor which is a beauty in it's simplicity.
Cheers!

Great score!

Is that a hobbyist razor saw int he lower right?
I'm sure we're all anticipating a full list of the razors.

Thanks guys.. Been reading up on wet sanding, grit and the like. Unfortunately where I'm stumped is removing the pins. Well not removing exactly but once it's drilled with a 1/16 the bit the n what? Ok, so now you have it drilled out and are holding the pin....Where do you get the replacement caps once you drilled through it? Having difficulty finding info on that. I wish I could spend more time with them today as I dd a cursory look at them just seperating the good from the bad but our new puppy Duke is taking up a lot of time.

So maybe next weekend I'll devote more time to sorting & sanding. In the meantime more research and a lot of practice. Luckily I have some 20 other to practice on removing the pins and replacing them.

Be very careful when drilling out pins - I've seen more than a few occasions where the pin gets hot and can melt the surrounding scales.
If you aren't trying to save the scales this won't matter - but disappointing if they were good ones.

I often use a center punch to make a guide for the drill bit as they can wander off center on the pins - make sure the bit is sharp.

Well I got around to writing down the main razors that I though worth mentioning. Nothing "big" like some of you guys here but cool for a newbie coming to straights. Many of these date should be taken with a grain of salt as I'm no expert. Below are some examples.
First up is a Faques Lecoultre au Sentier Somewhere around 1853
Francis Newton Sheffield 1838
Joseph Allen & sons 1890
Torrey razor company
Bencall Hand Forged
John Heifford Sheffield 18??
GFO Wostenholm & sons x2

HA! Now I have true antiques. Super excited as a member already offred to hlep hone these and get them back up to snuff. This might just motivate e to start shaving with a straight. Any of those above any would rec to shave with first once honed?

$40 for the lot?!? Wow. You're a helluva wheel n dealer.
Actually truth is he talked himself down. I didn't say a word. We kept talking about shaving and shooting the breeze and he kept going saying I'll give that to you for $60...then $50...then $40. I'm a horrible negotiator.

Thank you! I'll definitely keep this in mind and is sound advice. Like per drilling wood so you don't crack it.

Are you freaking kidding me?! $40?!?!?! Have fun with all those, they should keep you busy for a good while

Thanks! Sanded my first one today on a throw away the ones you see closed on the right, with 80 grit then 180 grit. Turned out a nice matte finish and managed to get all the rust off. So far so good.
