Help With Crumbly AoS

I have a puck of AoS lavender I've used about 10 times. I usually let it dry for about 30 minutes, then cover. Anyway, recently its been getting kinda crumbly, as in small chucks are coming off. I think this is due to the fact that my storage bowl which I load from is too large and it tends to wobble around a lot. Also, lather falls down below the soap and dries making it kind of crusty.

So what options do I have? I hear you can't melt tallow-based soaps, even under low heat via double boiler. I don't have a cheese-grater, although I could borrow one I suppose. I use stackable tupperware bowls, so I don't really want to switch. What do you guys suggest?

The soap shouldn't be crumbling, no matter what size of container it is in. Can you post some pictures?

You'd be surprised how soft that puck really is. First option is to use some serious thumb pressure to squish it down and into shape. If your thumbs aren't up to the task cover the soap with a piece of wax paper and get a coffee tamper or other small heavy object and go to town.

I've just noticed small chucks crumbling off, I think it has to do with rocking around the container as I'm lathering, although I'm not really sure. I have a puck of cade that fits these same bowls quite nicely, and I don't have lather crusting up all over the place. I will try using a blunt object and some wax paper to squish it down, but it looks pretty dense and hard.

I'm going to recommend milling it down with a cheese grater ($.99) at the dollar store.

I would find an old metal one that can grate in four different sizes in a Goodwill or other used item shop. It will last you your lifetime if you take care of it. Mine is at least 50 years old now and I actually use it quite often.
