Help! My colonge and shaving clash. Need suggestions.

I'm trying to find a way to make my shaving and my cologne merge together, rather than crash. Most colognes I have tried just didn't suit me. I have only found a couple that I enjoy wearing. My top pick is Versace Dreamer, my second pick is Dirty English by Juicy (and yes, I feel like a huge tool admitting that.) One thing that I don't like is for my shaving cream, after shave, shampoo, and soap to all clash up in the nose. Does anyone have a suggestion for a shaving cream and/or aftershave that would smell similar to, or at least complement Dreamer?

Hey Hillbilly, thanks for chiming in
I haven't seen many great options for unscented shaving creams. Not sure how I would like that... Part of the fun of shaving is smelling it, know what I mean?
That being said, I use Proraso most of the time. I have a tub of TOBS Sandalwood that I use once in a while. It gives a really great shave, but the scent is not for me. I like the shave I get, so I was wondering if they had other scents that would jive with the ones that I like. I also have another glycerin soap from a local farmer's market that I use sometimes, and it has a pretty neutral, soapy kind of scent. Shaves great, but smells like the soap they used to put in the dispensers at the sinks in school when I was a kid.

I hear that, like chemical bubble gum. At least it doesn't smell like the stuff they sprinkled on up-chuck.:a16:
can you describe the s nets of those two colognes, because I have not smelled them but have smelled many shave products.

Would if I could, but I think that is pretty close to impossible. I don't know the lingo to describe scents in words. For me, it's like trying to tell a color blind person what "green" is. I'm the worst to try and use words to describe scents. I guess I would use words like musky and spicy, and avoid words like citrusy and flowery. I know that doesn't help much. I was just hoping someone had smelled these particular things before and could point me in a general direction.

For something that has some musk and spice while going in a different direction than The Dreamer, I would recommend Thierry Mugler A*Men.
There's nothing else that smells like it, and you can pick it up for less than $50.

Sorry, I meant basenotes. Anyway, I looks like the Versace is the floral/powder/spice, a pretty strange combo. Moreover, the Juicy is woodsy and spicy. It is going to be hard to find a single scent to blend with these.

i am thinking DRH Marlborough to use with Juicy and DRH Arlington with Versace. Sorry that these are both DRH but both are really muted and do not last long. They are both really great products.

Thanks for looking it to it! I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to scents. I just know "that smells nice" and "I don't dig that" I really have no knowledge of how to piece it all together. I think one of the reasons I like Dreamer is that is is a strange scent. As you said earlier, a pretty strange combo. I just know that I like it. I know that doesn't help much in terms of description, but it's the best I can do.

On a side note though... Years ago when I was in college, there was a girl that I was interested in. It was sort of bad timing, because she was a good friend of my five year long girlfriend. For me, cheating was never an option. I'm just not wired that way. But this other girl and I agreed on just about everything two college aged kids talk about and we grew very close. If I were ever going to be weak, it would have been with her, but that didn't happen. It was her that told me that she liked Dreamer. I bought a bottle, without even sampling it, only because she and I agreed on everything else. So, I figured if she liked this scent I would too. And that ended up being correct.

I did run into her again years later, and time had changed both of us in a way that we didn't fit each other anymore. That connection wasn't there like it was when we were younger, but I can't help but to feel a little more alive in a youthful way when I use the Dreamer.
I know that does nothing to sum up what the "bass-notes" are, but there it is anyway.

You might try Ralph Lauren safari. If you like that scent, they make s soap as well. Or maybe floris 89. Or try a vetiver smelling soap.

Grab some samples of the DRH scents and a few others. I think even MWF would pair with the Juicy. You could also try to use unscented and add your cologne to it, if tallow based grate the soap and press the scent into it when pressing into a container. If glycerin based, melt it in the microwave and add scent.

That's actually a pretty good idea. I never considered starting with an unscented shave soap and adding my own scent to it. What a simple solution! Thanks Hillbilly!

Whoa.... I misread originally. I thought you were talking about after shave vs. cologne.

The scent from your shaving cream is very fleeting.... I wold not worry at all about your shave cream clashing with a fragrance. What do you use for after shave on your face?

Hey StylinLA-

You didn't misread the first time around. I'm just being nit-picky. I understand that the scent from shaving cream is short-lived. It's just my OCD showing through. I think it'd be nice if my products were similar, or at least complimented each other.

As far as aftershave goes, I'm kinda new at taking shaving seriously. I've not yet found an AS that I really like. Most of the time I use Clubman, but truth be told I'm not a big fan of it. The only other AS on my shelf is from a local artisan shop, called New Spice by Saint Charles Shave. It's OK, but I'm personally not crazy about the scent. I mainly used the examples of Versace Dreamer and Dirty English to say "These are the kinds of scents that I like," hoping to find other stuff, like aftershave, that is similar or complementary to them.

I'm lucky my favorite soap is MWF. I don't think it clashes with anything. I like Krampert's Bay Rum AS. It has a mild sense and fades quickly.

Try Perry Ellis night, polo double black, polo red, ysl l'homme, and see if you like those scents. If you do, they have aftershave you can buy. Nivea aftershave balm is somewhat neutral, but has a good smell that is short lived too

I'm not completely OCD about this but I know what you mean. When I started out I wanted my shave cream, aftershave and EdT to match. Then as I got into scents and bought a bunch of them it wasn't possible. Many of the scents didn't have matching shaving products and even for the ones that did the cost was prohibitive. For me, the EdT was most important - scent wise. So rather than matching, I moved to complementing. So, for instance, if I was planning to wear an EdT that had a major rose component, I'll use a shaving cream and aftershave that are rose scented. I've drifted from this a bit over the years but I still tend to kind of 'circle a theme' with my products in the morning.

hold on a minute there, partner.
since you're having issues, consider starting from ground zero.
go with a classic combo for a while to get your nose straight.
for instance, very reasonably, old spice soap + aftershave + cologne
or take a step up, proraso menthol eucalyptus soap + aftershave
or speick soap + aftershave + cologne
get a bit more serious, penhaligons Blenheim bouquet cream + aftershave
next, Truefitt and Hill 1805 soap + aftershave
or, AOS Sandalwood cream + cologne
or go for broke, creed green irish tweed soap + GIT cologne

try some of these "suite" combos for a while, then decide where to go from there.
