Good morning lads. I am in a bit of a Steampunk frame of mind these last few years and started thinking about a few projects I want to try. Of course the customary brass gears, watch faces and all that figure into the designs but I want to add a bit more of a Colonial flavour to the mix and was thinking of old brass cartridge heads for some of the adornment. Most of the use will involve only the heads of the cartridge brass so anything I use will be things you were going to chuck in the dustbin or recycling heap. Cartridges that have been reloaded to the point of non use, things like that. Or maybe just a few old oddball cases you have lying around waiting for some good purpose.
First let me say I do NOT have the gumption to ask anyone for heirloom or rare cartridges. Would I love to have some old Kynoch express rounds for this? Yeah, I would. Would I kick the shins of any man silly enough to let them be cut up for this type of stuff? Yeah, I would. Many of the old brands and calibres of this type of ammunition have significant collector value. I would urge you to check it thoroughly before giving it over to this kind of use. Again, if it is crushed or whatever and of no use to the owner then fine. And we should probably avoid any loaded ammo. Shipping is not too big a deal in the U.S. but the weight makes it costly for all concerned. And who knows what the regs are post 9-11?
Certainly any old Webey revolver brass such as .455 or .476 would be fantastic. .303 calibre rifle brass(or any military brass of large diameter) would be great too as long as it was marked with military stamps or old commercial brands like Holland & Holland, Westley Richards, anything like that. England used to have a huge variety of arms and ammunition makers so finding some old stuff would probably not be too difficult. This would likely have to be limited to continental U.S. because of shipping issues with this type of item from over seas. I would certainly cover shipping for items like this. So if you have something lying around waiting for the dustbin or recycling, drop me a PM or whatever and lets talk.
Cheers, Todd
