Help me pick my next razor

Hi,

I started with DE last year, with a 38C. I've actually had very good luck with it, I find it very forgiving. I tend to use Astra blades with it.

Now I want another razor :001_smile

I've been thinking of trying to find either:
  • Something more aggressive (like a slant)
  • An old Gillette
  • A travel razor

Thoughts?

I don't use either a slant or an old Gillette.

For a travel razor I use the Merkur travel razor that breaks down and fits into a very small leather pouch. I have it in both safety bar and open comb. They both stay in my dopp kit and are great for travel. You can stick a couple of blades right into the pouch with them. I find them to be excellent shavers. :thumbup1:

If your up for using a vintage, go with an adjustable... ive also heard that the merkur futur is great too if your looking for brand new

Vintage Slant or Gillette Bar Handle New. The New is an awesome shaver. I have a few shave grade ones. If you might want to go that route shoot me a PM.

I may as well give more info...

Things I like about my 38C:
- forgiving. Outside of a few nicks, I've never cut myself. Even when I started.
- the grip. I love the textured grip, it won't slip. One thing that I don't like about the Futur.
- the handle length. Gives me enough room to use the razor. I don't have big hands but I like a bit of space.
- seems to love the inexpensive Astra blades.

What I don't like:
- the handle length :001_smile Seriously, it's a big razor.
- this is probably more of my technique, but I've never been able to get a true BBS shave on my neck unless I do about four passes. I wonder if a more aggressive razor would help.
- while hefty, it does kind of feel like cheap metal. :001_huh:

How about a Muhle?

Its head is excellent, either closed or open comb.
And the quality is outstanding.

I found my Muhles to provide consistently closer and smoother shaves than any other razor.

As for your requirements,
- the grip is great
- it is forgiving
- the handle is longer than most Gillette razors, but not too long
- it is high high build quality
