Help me pick a Boar Please and Some Questions

I want a smaller boar brush. I like my 49, but it's too big and floppy.

I'm thinking the 10218 .

It has a 22mm knot and a 51mm knot. Do you boar users feel that an even shorter loft would be too scrubby in a boar? I also don't want one that is too dense. I really don't like lather hogs. The density of the 49 is perfect in my opinion.

You probably couldn't go wrong with any Omega. I have the 31064 and absolutely love it. Also look at the Semogue brushes.

That Omega will probably work fine. I have a 10077, which has a similarly sized knot, and it's a pretty decent brush. It's not floppy and it isn't all that dense. I'd say go for it.

How scrubby was the 10077? I have some pretty sensitive skin. I feel like the feel of the VDH is perfect and it doesn't have a very high loft.

All I know is that I'm very happy with my Omega #31064.

$24 delivered! How can you beat that? And it's a great brush!

If you have sensitive skin, I don't recommend the 1520. The loft is very short and prickly. I have an Omega (the one a step above the basic colored handle) that is the perfect boar brush in my opinion. But I only ever use my Rooney 1/1.

Feel free to shoot me a PM if you are interested in seeing the Omega, or the 1520 if you like, though mine has been installed on a vintage handle...

Yes! I found this too. I like the scrubbiness but not the prickle....

Just got a 49, and while more manageable than the 48, is still a bit too big. Damn if is isn't as soft as the Semogue LE 2009 for a third of the price....

Is the 31064 smaller than the 49?

I'd like a loft of around 50mm-55mm.

Thanks,

John

If I ever decide to buy another Omega brush, it will be one with a metal ring, not plastic around a knot base.
Cracks ie, small gaps were reported in black plastic rings, and water gets into a hollow handle. Even if the handle is not hollow in some brushes, gaps in a plastic rings aren't that attractive.

Theres a risk you could go from one extreme to the other. I agree the 48/49's are way to long of loft, but I also bought a 10029 which is waaaaay too small. Remember in a boar brush those same dimensions seem much smaller. The 31064 gets good recommendations for a reason.

Small how? Was the loft just too short for your liking? Or was it just the knot overall felt too small?

Knot overall. The loft also feels very short - too short, though some may enjoy that aspect of it. The problem I have with these small boar brushes is they just don't make or hold enough lather. Having said that I have not yet used a small Vulfix boar, which are small and get great reviews.

The 31064, despite its dimensions, functions and feels like a small to medium sized badger brush, makes and holds enough lather for 3 passes with the same amount of product as you would use with a badger brush.

Just be aware that if you haven't seen a 22mm boar knot in person, it will be really small, and nothing like a 22mm badger knot in volume or functionality.

I hadn't looked at the vulfix brushes yet. The Vulfix 18 looks promosing. Any opinions on vulfix brushes gollum?

Are you saying that the 31064 has a shorter loft than the 49? Both are listed at 60mm, I think.

My ideal would be around 50-55mm!

I think the 31064 has the highest quality bristles of most boars, but is a little big for me. I prefer the Vulfix 2233 for its size and bristle. You can put the lather exactly where you want it. It's got a great looking solid resin handle and holds plenty of lather . For the $$ you don't have much to lose and can always sell it if need be. As they say buy both, or keep both , you will only know what fits you if you try them yourself !! One plus with mine is it broke in fast and had no smell like my 49 did ! By the way the 31064 also had no funk to it as well .
