Help Me ID a Mechanical Pencil

My daughter bought me this mechanical pencil for Father's Day. She said that when she bought it, she was told that it could be converted to a pen, but there's no hardware with it to do that. That's about all we know about it. These are photos that she clipped from the listing. The crown is topped with a black jewel decorated w/concentric circles and is slightly conical (not flat). I can't see anything written on the pen anywhere except for "PATD" on the clip so I don't know who makes it. Can anybody help me ID it?

Tough one, Nid. Looks like a job for Jonathan Veley at Leadhead's pencils, he loves that stuff.

Thanks for the tip. Here's what he had to say about it:

I'd give a 99 percent probability that it's an Eagle Pencil Co. pencil from the late 1930s, and a 1 percent chance that Eagle made it for some other company for sale under their name.

He posted some photos in a thread I started at FPN about it, including one of a gray/black pencil with exactly the same pattern, and several other pencils with the same clip. Huzzah!

What size lead does it take Chris?

This is from the answer I got on FPN:

The pencil takes .046 inch lead, which is slightly larger than 1.1 mm (but not quite 1.18). Modern Retro 51 lead will work, but vintage .046 lead is still pretty widely available and will probably work better.

I'll probably try to scare up some on eBay once the holiday is over.
