HELP ME! I cannot find...

I am going to give a straight razor a try, I want a spike point so I can detail a chin curtain, I like to do things with my facial hair and change it up. But I can't square it off with my Fusion razor, just doesn't do the trick I can't see what I am cutting etc etc.

I don't want to spend over 30.00 for a spike point razor.
If you can please point me in the right direction for a decent spike point razor.
Its going to probably be used 2-3 maybe 4-5 max times a month.

Thanks!

uh oh. Beginner+Spike+little use+cheapo = tell your wife to call the ambulance :wink2:

Seriously though, did you read a bit through the forum regarding the troubles people have with spikes, namely beginners? Its bound to be a frustrating experience in my opinion. Good luck anyhow.

Thats just a myth. A round point will cut you if your careless. A spike point just has a spike at the end. And it can be tamed, in fact it shouldn't be extending out like a jagged tip to scrape your face.

Lol, it is only flesh, news is it grows back AMAZING.
lol i'm just palyin, I understand I will cut myself its apart of the game.
But i'm not a razor maniac I don't collect them, I just want the spike point so I can detail my chin curtain better, and just make it look cleaner.
I have read a lot on shaving with a straight and I have watched plenty of videos on shaving with a straight. So i'm not worried, again I know i'll cut myself if its a good deep cut i'll take pictures for you :)

If it costs, $20 to get a razor sharpened. So the 30 you wish to spend is not very much. I wish you luck or suggest you try ebay.

The only suggestion I have is, purchase one of those feather shavette type thingies, and use that to detail your facial hair, it'd be easier then trying to find a spike in shave ready condition for $30, and from your comments, you would be a semi-infrequent user of this sort of thing. The feather has a reasonably square tip, and you don't have the hassle of getting a strop or hone to keep the edge on it, which will keep immediate costs down.

Unless you have a rabid hatred of disposable type blades (not that I would guess you have, given you admitted to using a fusion)

No I have been thinking that this might be much easier, but I honestly like the looks of a straight edge rather then using a disposable one.
But it is what it is, thanks for finally making me decide on just getting a shavette. It will be best for my situation, I am not necessarily going to use it to shave my whole face just little parts. Thanks!

Screw it I don't want a damn shavette. I been thinking about it hard and I want the real deal. Just don't want to spend a tone of money on a piece of metal and plastic that's just ridiculous.

The metal is very special and skillfully made. Even the plastic is of a weight to make the instrument comfortable in the hand whilst in use.

A new razor should last you your lifetime. So compare that with the cost of disposables daily for the rest of your life and even the most expensive razors start to look very inexpensive.

I understand that they look just like a pen knife and so the cost doesn't equate. But a good basic new razor is $100. Quality razors are $300 and more. Hand made razors are even more expensive and take many skillfull man hours of work to produce.

So unless you are prepared to buy one off the internet and make it shave ready yourself, it sounds to me that you are not going to ever get a straight.

Straight razors that work cost more than you are prepared to pay. But I think you know that already. This is a shaving forum not a charity shop. But there's an idea since you can not afford a razor. Why don't you give the money to the Haiti earthquake appeal.

As others have said, the time it takes getting an average condition vintage razor into shave ready condition seems to average at $15 value for most people. So you're looking at $15 towards materials (not including shipping). I personally would trash a razor before I'd sell it for $15. The time and cost of packaging, getting to the P/O, waiting in line, having to deal with the hassle of a buyer who can't strop screwing it up and blaming me, etc, etc etc. Not worth it. You occasionally see razors go for ~$30 on classifieds, but they're generally low demand, extremely worn (5/8 that are now 3/8, that sort of thing), pitted, or in other ways almost as disposable as the Shavettes. For something in good condition $45+ is about entry level. If you're going to make demands like a spike point (something I don't see as being especially common), I'd expect $70+ if you're lucky. The only way I see this getting cheaper is finding one that doesn't need much work on ebay that isn't a big name manufacturer, snagging it cheap and sending it out to a restorer. That probably gets you down into the $50-60 range and is much more likely than finding what you want for a low price on classifieds.

This isn't a tomayto tomahto situation, so don't confuse the poor n00b.

In the hands of a master shaver, the spike point is nothing to worry about. But in the hands of a beginner, and razor needs to be approached with caution ... the spike point razors much more so than the round-tip.

While I hear stories about spike points poking the bejesus out of some noobs, in no way are these stories universal. That is to say, yes, some people have a very hard time with the spike, but no, not everyone. Not even close to everyone I would say.

Good luck finding something that fits your needs then.

The only other suggestion I have is purchasing an ebay special for ten bucks +p&h, and cutting the toe off so it matches your desired look. there's plenty out there

As for the "metal and plastic" comment? A GT40 is "just" plastic and metal so why should you expect to pay any more for one then say, A second hand Pinto with 300000 miles on it and a tired engine? Heck, by that reasoning you should pay more for the pinto, cos it's got room for passengers in the back

Oh, and even if you Could find a shave ready square point for $30, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't cover a strop, Which is also required in the kit in order for the razor to do it's job effectively, Cheapest strops I've seen are in the realm of $20 new.

Your best option is to pay a bit more then your thirty dollars, try closer to the $100 mark rather then $30, your options are a little more open

Failing all that, you Could always try shaving with a pocket knife, Let us know how that turns out, 'kay?

yeah, tis a silly looking price

but then again, hes only been looking for a day, so im not surprised he hasnt found one yet

I have a workhorse razor that fits your budget. It is a unbranded 5/8ths spike point, original condition with no hone wear and is shave ready.PM me if interested.I can't post pics via Pm so here they are.

I'd advise OP to take that offer, he won't beat it.
Then buy a Filly Strop.

If he's just using it for detailing, he may be able to get away with just hand soap or can goo as lubricant. But I'd drop the $7.50 on the walmart kit to get the rest of what he needs. $57.50 and he's in the game.
