Help me decide which razor to get

Ok, I had a go with an Aristocrat and I just could not get to like it. I mean it was an ok shave but I got closer with my 40' s superspeed. I may have just needed to break it in but I ended up taking a loss of 10 bucks and selling it to a member here.

The bright side is that leaves me 50 dollars to fund a new razor. Right now the only razor I use is that superspeed mentioned above. Most of the time it is just fine but I would like to give something new a chance. In the past I had a Merkur HD slant. That was a pretty nice razor to me but for some reason I sold it. I needed some money and tried to convince myself I only needed one razor anyways. I owned a Progress for a couple weeks but sold that, I didn't care for the handle and I thought it was kind of awkward to work with.

So I am thinking about an open comb razor or even a barber pole slant. Bob over at Bob's razorworks has some really nice looking razors with a Gillette New head long tooth comb. That really peaked my interest. I know I don't want an adjustable razor. Any suggestions or opinions?

I think you answered your own question. Open Comb would be your next step. The NEW is very good. It will be different than a slant or SS!

Get the New open comb and start with the common fat handle. They are plentiful and many are in great shape. The razor has a very nice balance to it and you'll get a great shave. You can upgrade the handle later on if you like it.

Hey Matt, have you tried a schick injector razor yet. They shave real close and they look cool.

For $50 and a little patience, you could have yourself a whole mitt full of nice razors. It's not uncommon to find a razor lot for sale that would have an adjustable gillette, techs, an open comb, and an assortment of different Gems for that price.

+1! Actually, you could get two or three decent lots. Just don't expect to win every auction.

I have both the HD and the 1904 in open comb. Both are great, but I lean towards the 1904 most often. I like the thinner head on the 04.

The Gillette New then is probably what I will go for. The wood handled custom is 60 dollars. I actually have a Gem already but just never really used it more than a couple times. Maybe I should give that more of a try. Thanks for the tips.

I decided to try the HD open comb from Merkur. I have had an HD before and liked it so I think this should turn out to be a decent choice for me.
