What's new

Happy 21st Birthday to me, I got myself gout...

Well, do you either eat large amounts of meat and seafood or drink excessively? I think the vast majority of gout cases are the result of one of those two things. High sugar intake contributes as well

I've read several reports of an increase in gout among young people - although I will say that 21 seems a very young age to be suffering.

Gout is caused by an excess of uric acid that causes crystal to build up in the joints. The exact causes are not completely known, but it is believed that enzymes in beer, meat, seafood, and some carbonated drinks are linked to it. It is also linked, strongly, with obesity.

That said, you really ought to seek treatment from a medical doctor with this problem. A doctor will be able to accurately diagnose your condition (it might be something else) as well as evaluate your overall health, and make appropriate recommendations and prescribe a course of treatment. For example, gout is one of the symptoms of kidney disease or high blookd pressure. This sort of underlying medical condition needs to be dealt with promptly.

The internet is full of helpful people with good ideas. But medical problems need to be attended to by a medical doctor, in person.

I have had gout for years, it is a real pain literally. There are 2 types of standad meds for it colchinine which in low doses can be used to prevent attacks and in higher doses to treat an attack, and in worse cases allupurinol which is used only to prevent attacks by keeping the uric acid level down. I have been on both for years and for really severe attacks they usually prescribe a steroid too.

As others said stay away from meats particularly pork products, greasy procesed meats like slim jims are no good either, I find eating dehydrated/dried cherries do help as does drinking a lot of water and weight reduction helps too.

Best thing as you have done is see your Dr. ge the blood test done and if put on meds take them exactly as prescribed as they work by reducing the uric acid level over time, if you neglect to take them as prescribed the attacks will be more frequent and painful.

Yes I've had it for years also. As long as you take the meds you have no problems however you should avoid the foods people brought up here. If you have attacks, every time one occurs it damages the joint a little bit so over time that could be a real problem.

"Got Shoes?"
If you suffer from gout, you may get to know the "little green pill". If I go away they are always in my suitcase.

Maybe so, but the problem that I have with doctors is they are very poor at diagnosing the cause of chronic health problems. Sure, the uric acid level is high, but what caused that to happen? They have no clue about that, but are very good at prescribing a drug to mask the symptoms. That's been my experience, anyway.

i've had gout for 15 years and have been prescribed allopurinol for daily use.that said i watch what i eat and only take them occasionally.i have not had an attack in over a year.high meat consumption, sardines, gravy and a host of other foods can cause problems.your dr will give you a handbook about it.
dehydration from excessive sweating, excessive alchohol intake etc will trigger an attack.the uric acid crystals can also form kidney stones:eek:.
so go ahead and take care of it now.
