Hanging strop?

Is this a necessary piece to ones kit, or are paddle types preferred? I need to buy one, so could you recommend a solid choice?

Thanks!

hanging is not necessary not, strop yes. What you will use is a preference more than anything.

I'm not looking for cheap, how about asking this. If I were to buy a really good hanging strop, and or a really good bench or paddle strop, which ones would you recommend?

I make knives, I have stones to 5000 grit, I know, no good for razors. I have several leather strops, balsa etc. I started straight shaving just a few months ago, I already have 4 different razors, a few soaps, and a leather strop I made myself. I have Silvertip badger knots, and will make a few brushes.

I am looking for a "razor only" setup. I have seen several different hanging strops on Fendrihan's site, up to $80 or $90 2 inch wide, 3 inch wide, latigo, leather only, leather and linen, single or double straps. I don't want to buy 3 or 4 to try, I am looking for a solid recommendation that will help me get the most from my razors.

I am getting a Kanayama Cordovan bench strop. Will it do for straights? And i guess want to add a quality hanger.

My wife would have her foot up my ars before I could even mount mine in the bathroom. That said, I lay my strop flat on my vanity and use it like a bench strop.

I'm partial to Tony Miller strops.

You mean like this :biggrin1:

People are just recommending cheap strops because people tend to cut up their first. Beyond that, flat leather is flat leather.

Have a look at the Big Daddy strop at www.starshaving.com first before paying 2 to 3 times as much. Or more.

The Poor Man strop from www.whippeddog.com will save you even moer money. Your first strop will likely be trashed by the time you get done learning how to strop without trashing your strop. You can also learn on newspaper. Fold an entire sheet lengthwise over and over until it is about 3" wide or a bit less. Pass one end over a towel bar and pinch both ends together, and pull tight. Instant strop, low cost, expendable and disposable. In fact I recommend you use this the first half dozen attempts, no matter what leather strop you start with.

I would prefer hanging over bench or paddle, for an unpasted strop. But you can go with either at no great disadvantage. BTW a bench strop actually works best when it is held loosely in hand rather than laid flat on a bench.

You can make a bench strop by glueing an old strop with the hardware ends cut off, or else a plain piece of leather from tandy, to a piece of wood. No magical incantations needed. Just make sure it is flat. Draw, Shmaw. It doesn't matter for your first strop, just a preference that you will develop later on.
