Hair product dilemma

I'm almost done with my tub of Bryll cream and I am looking for something to replace it. I like Bryll cream, but I'm looking for something that is a bit more....modern?

I need something that is not going to make my hair crispy and something that won't make my hair look or feel greasy. I tend to stick around creams and fibers.

Any suggestions ?

Groom & Clean is nice but has less hold in my opinion than Brylcreem. And I don't think it fits your "modern" requirement. (but I do keep both Brylcreem & Groom & Clean in stock at home.) Stiff gels are pretty lame, you're right. If you want modern try one of the newer pomades on the market, I've had good luck with American Crew (lil Pricey) & Suave. I really liked the Suave & was much cheaper at around $6 compared to the AC at $15. I've since moved onto more traditional pomades & my favorite is hands down Murrays (granted I havent tried DAX) but I use Layrite more often due to the fact it washes out. (But doesn't have the nice shine of Murrays). Experiment with a few & give us your feedback!!!

I use Layrite more often due to the fact it washes out. (But doesn't have the nice shine of Murrays).

I use Layrite exclusively, but I have different circumstances than most. Since I'm growing my hair out (eventually to ponytail length), I need some serious control to keep it out of my face until it can be tied.

Gels take too long to set and can "break", with clumps of unruly strands flopping around. Oil-based pomades are a royal pain to wash out. Layrite is the answer. Applied to towel-dried hair, it's almost gel like, with immediate hold that dries somewhat stiffly. On dry hair, it behaves much like other pomades with waxy, oily qualities. A really cool, versatile product that quickly washes out with shampoo. The vanilla scent is an added bonus.

I'm a big Murray's and Dax fan, too. Finally found a place that had the Murray's light, which I like about as much as the original and is a little easier to apply, and about six different versions of Dax, I think one could find a version of Dax that was exactly to one's liking. I would not know how to tell that from the outside of the can though.

Groom and clean is definitely fun, too.

I've had great results with Clubman Styling Gel.

Not sticky or greasy and it washes out easy in the shower.

Of course, wait for it...

YMMV.

All of the above are great choices, and I'll add one more "modern" choice, which would be the Axe Pomade. A lot of my friends that have gotten away from the gels and greases are using this now because it's less greasy and not "crispy" when it dries. It's not my thing personally, but it sounds like it may be what you're looking for.

American Crew Fiber is a good choice for a modern, low shine, high hold hair wax. I used to use pomade but I found them too hard to wash out or not providing sufficient hold for my short, straight, stiff hair; they also make my dark hair too damn shiny in the hot sun here. The AC Fiber holds well, doesn't melt in the sun, doesn't get hard and crusty, and easy to touch up...pretty much perfect.

Though I love AC Fiber, I've been looking out for an alternative for a while now simply because of the high price. I've tried the Axe Messy Look paste since its ingredients are similar to AC Fiber's but it doesn't provide nearly enough hold and smells "girly" with a heavy banana scent. While the AC Fiber smells great, like lemons/limes.

The other day though I was surfing the net the other day and found this stuff: M Professional Fiber Styling Creme, it has identical ingredients to the AC Fiber according to this site, and apparently has the same scent:

You can find the M Professional stuff online for about $3-5 per tub. Has anybody ever tried it? I'm thinking of testing it out. For that price why not?

There's also multiple Gatsby Moving Rubber products at Asian supermarkets I saw that are highly regarded and about $7-8 a tub (never used them myself...yet).

American Crew Fibre is good. Bed Head Matte Wax holds even better with a crisp hold that doesn't look crisp.

For creams, the Jack Black syling cream works pretty good.

I've heard good things about the Bumble and Bumble wax.

Wow, the legendary, some thought apochryphal, Dapper Dan! Clearly the epitome of men's hair styling products, or, at least, of the classic promades!

I have fine hair that tends to want to droop down over my forehead. For over 50 years I have tried an untold number of products and never found one that truly satisfied me until 5 months ago.

Like you I don't want my hair to feel like cast iron as most gels do. Also with gels the hold is gone completely once the cast iron has deteriorated as I unconciously run my fingers through my hair. I also don't want greasy hair like Brycreem and Alberto VO5 give me. I also don't want it sticky and collecting dust likes pomades and Brilliantine do for me.

I've tried leaving conditioner in my hair, plus every other tip my barbers have told me over the years. My final approach was a combination of Vitalis and a little gel.

Five months ago, after I started wet-shaving, I bought a bottle of G.F. Trumper's Floreka Green Hair Lotion and it is perfect for my hair. It holds it in place without being rigid, sticky, or greasy and gives my hair a nice gleam (not a shine). It is pricey but well worth the extra cost to me. My wife likes the old fashioned pleasant smell. No comparison between it and any other stuff I've ever used

I feel I have found the Holy Grail of hair lotions for me.

<... somehow, "But I don't want FOP, dammit! I'm a Garnier Fructis Man!" just doesn't sound quite the same. >

Word Up!

I have, I suppose like many of the bereft (and naive) searched in vain for the famous/infamous FOP pomade! Do you have photo of this yeti-like concoction, too?

thats my choice. Ive been using clubman for years and have tried newer stuff and have always returned to clubman.
