Gunk? Plating Loss? Removal?

I have been trying to get rid of gunk on what is an otherwise beautiful gold tone Ever Ready Single Edge Razor. Having no luck, despite repeated soakings in barbicide, scrubbing bubbles and applying said with toothbrush and cotton swabs, I am now turning to the pros.

Any ideas would be greatly welcome.

I imagine it is safe to shave with it?

Thanks in advance!

Red rot just brass corrosion, It's more serious on a horn, because by the time it shows up, it's already all the way through. On the surface of the razor it shouldn't be a big issue.

In my experience, with much less severe cases, Brasso does the trick, but lots of scrubbing an re-applying will be necessary with a spot that severe if that is truly the case.

Just a thin layer in a hard to reach spot takes multiple applications and lots of scrubbing with Q-tips to remove (Trust me, just came from the bathroom working on my Sheraton project razor)

Hope it helps,

JD

Thanks.

I did a quick brasso application and there is much improvement.

I will finish up tomorrow, God Willing, and post photos.

If you have a Dremel with the cotton polishing pads, I'd give that a shot. I have had a lot of success on razors with my Dremel.

I'm sure there's no problem with polishing it out. I may be wrong, but I suspect that this razor is solid brass. Just keep polishing it until you like the way it looks. If somehow the area is corroded, depending on how ambitious you are, you can polish it out. I had some corrosion that looked like that on the cap of one of mine, and it polished up just fine with a cream metal polish, I believe it was called "Flitz" or some such. I suspect any metal polish will do just fine.
