Guerlain Habit Rouge.thinking about blind buying

But before I do I’m hoping you guys can tell me a little bit about it. I’ve been reading up on it the last couple of days and I’m fairly certain I would love it. The only thing holding me back though is that many people have referred to it as being “very older man” smelling. I am a full bearded, tattoo sleeve having 26 year old and while I do enjoy looking and overall being a very mature young person, I really don’t want to smell like a grandpa. Just isn’t my thing. But I don’t at all mind a mature scent. I guess I’m hoping everyone is on the same page with me on “mature” smelling colognes which I have no problem pulling off and colognes that clearly shouldn’t be worn by anyone who isn’t a grandpa. I have many more than this but my most used fragrances by far, just to give everyone an idea what I like, are Prada Amber Pour Homme, LIDG & LIDGE, Jaipur, TM Grey Vetiver, Encre Noire, Guerlain Vetiver (reform) and Lubin Vetiver.

Well, actually, people seem to say is smells more like and old lady than an old man. I like it though. It is a good fragrance. But why blind buy it? Is is so easy to get a decant first.

Habit Rouge is in my top ten of fragrances. I think there is a good chance you will like it, but it's always safe to sample before purchasing a full bottle of any fragrance.

You should buy with caution. I like this scent but find it a bit cloying. Wear it lightly and you should be fine.

My grandfather and I both wear Habit Rouge. Actually he's dead now but he wore it. I don't anything elderly about it - neither old man or old lady. It's not my idea of what you'd wear to the meat-market as it does require a certain level of maturity to pull it off but so does Guerlain's Vetiver, actually. I think if you can wear one you can wear the other. But be prepared for a very light touch of powder - it's wrapped up into a soft suede-like leather scent but there's a dusty edge to it, which combined with the bergamot opening is what gets the "elderly" tag. Classic in my opinion, probably my favorite scent of all time and I'm an ice-climbing, beer-swilling, Stooge's fan.

Don't blind buy this one; get a sample first. It's a polarizing scent. Hailed and adored by many as the holy grail, but there are also the dissenters. I'll count myself as one of the latter category, although I don't feel strongly one way or the other about it. I have tried and tried to love it. I have purchased two bottles - the EDT and the EDP. The EDP is miles better than the EdT. I don't dislike HR, but for me it falls into the "I'll almost always choose something else over this" type of a scent.

I agree that it does have an old person-ish vibe to it, but not as much in the EdP. Chris is the man and knows his shiz, but I would be inclined to say it has more than a very light touch of powder. The first time I tried this (the EdT), I thought it was a powder bomb and struggled to detect the other notes. The EdP definitely has less powder and is a much better scent. YMMV.

At the end of the day, if you wear and like GV, you could probably pull off HR. I actually prefer GV to HR in any of the iterations and formulae in which I have tried them.

Don't blind buy this :a50:

I tried to appreciate my 100 ml Habit Rouge EDT for 8 months - but a floral sharp note in it combined with the light floral vanilla makes me sick and gag.

I know some guys don't pick up that note, so it may work for you.
I would call this a floral barbershop scent, but officially it's an oriental woody frag.
I don't get any woods in it, and I don't get any leather either. But leather and sandalwood is part of the notes - but as with many frags that have sandalwood in them, this does not smell woody at all IMHO

The scent is an old type of classic scent - many would call it a granny scent.
The rosewood in the top makes me gag - and the lime comes out too strong and rough on my skin.

It's one of the blind buys (I couldn't test it anywhere) that I regret buying - threw it out.
But I wore it 10-12 times to learn to appreciate it, hated it equally much each time I wore it :cursing:

Your nose and the way you explain the notes in a scent and fragrance is unique and quite impressive
I really tried to learn to appreciate HB EDT, but after a dozen wearing had to throw it out - it made me gag and it influenced my temper in a bad way, when I wore it.
Along with Caron Yatagan, Jacomo de Jacomo, Halston Z-14, Serge Lutens Musc Koublai Khan, TF Italian Cypress (Z-14 clone) and Dior Fahrenheit 32 - the only fragrances I had to sell or simply throw out.
I was really patient, but hated them each and every time I wore them......

Habit Rouge is a classic masterpiece, so is Yatagan - but just not for me :biggrin1:

FYI I own and enjoy Guerlain Vetiver (New formula though). Prefer it in blends with other of my frags though, but do enjoy GV.

I have both the EDT and EDC versions, having paid $50 and $39 for 100ml bottles of each respectively.

There is actually significant difference between the two versions, and a lot of people prefer the EDC. Both have good longevity on me, but the EDC is lighter, projects less, is more a warm weather scent and is more masculine to my nose. The EDT I'd wear in cooler weather.

I must admit that while I was happy buying the EDC, I was in two minds about buying the more powdery EDT.

I wore the HR EdP today. I do not recommend a blind buy on any version. Please sample. It is to me a classic, but quirky scent. It's not quite as polarizing as some scents, but I've run across a fair number of guys like Claus above who generally like a very, very wide range of men's frags, but then this one really pisses them off.

I also find that men experience this one very differently from each other. Some get old lady out of it. Some get elegant and refined. Some find it inspirational. Some find it near vomit inducing. I tend think more frag heads like it than not, but the ones that don't like it really tend to loathe it.

For what its worth- Some of the famous users I've seen noted- Tony Blair, Sean Connery, Keith Richards, Alex Baldwin, Robert Redford.

It is a classic, but should sampled. Nothing you read about the notes, or other peoples comments, will really indicate how you will experience it. It's supposed to contain leather. I don't get that...or if I do it's very subdued.

I much prefer the harder to find EdP. Of the scents you listed as wearing imyourhuckleberry, it is most similar in personality to Jaipur. Kind of a similar scent now that I think of it. If you're pulling off Jaipur as a tatted up 26-year-old, you could pull this off for sure. But you should really smell it first.

Dont blind buy unless you are a fan of old man scents (see other thread regarding "old man" scents).

I dunno Schad... Dude likes Jaipur, which has a similar mature vibe IMO. If I run into a bearded 26-year-old sleeved guy wearing Jaipur, I'm thinking there's a lot more to this guy than meets the eye.

I am a fan of Jaipur also. But Jaipur and Habit Rouge are pretty different. I am having a hard time thinking of any similarities.

I have a few scents I think of as "old man" scents e.g. Dana English Leather and Homme De Gres.
The thing is, I've never smelled any old man wearing any scents, much less these ones.
I wonder how the perception arises?

There certainly are old style orientals like Lagerfeld Classic, KL, Equipage etc that are unlike modern orientals. I like them because one could wear them to work easily enough, whereas the newer orientals more often than not had an "I want to party/I'm on the hunt" vibe to them, which I didn't think went down well with the office environment.
Cheers,
Renato
