Great Old Time Barber Shop Expierience in Spain

So I'm in Spain working for a couple of months and am basically on auto pilot for a haircut till I get home. I more or less stumbled on to Pepe's in Rota (Andalucia) this morning. They cannot legally do Straight razor shaves in Spain any longer due to hygeine regulations but Pepe had all the old stuff. The chair, the straights for neck and side touch up. Pepe's is definitely not T&H but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. You can see from the one photo the old bowl and brush and straights. Couple of the straights were the trimmer type and one was an old gnarly green one with incredibly warped scales. No markings on the razor. He did lather me up with La Toja for the neck shave. Pepe's been at it for over fifty years he says and had some great pictures of himself cuttin hair back in the day hanging on the wall, likley wearing the same smock he's wearing today. He's a one man show, 12 years in his current shop and forty more in his other shop, all in Rota. Even does his own sweeping when he's finished. Only disappointment was no Myrsol for the finish. A pitcher of Sangria might have been nice as well, right? For 10e you can't go wrong. I imagine there's lots of similar barber shops tucked around Spain but I think you have to really look and ask around. Anyway thought y'all might enjoy these shots. To all of our brothers in Spain, especially those in Pamplona this week-Vive San San Fermin

Great post & Nice pictures.

Is it common for certain countries to have banned the use of straights for professional shaving? This seems kind of absurd . . .

Has there ever been any reported incident of infection from receiving a straight razor shave from a professional?

I've heard that certain states in the US won't allow professional shavers to use a shaving brush on their patrons.

Anyway, looks like Pepe is doing good work.

Glad y'all enjoyed the photos-I texted a pic of Pepe back to the girl who cuts my hair for years back home in her "Salon" and told her I had found a new stylist. Now if only I could find myself a sweet deal on a Fili or even a Palmera, and some Myrsol, I'd really be stoked. I've been scouring the Rastros (flea markets) here and there on the weekends with no luck thus far, but not giving up.

Very cool. I love history in general, and stuff like this always makes me feel good. I bought a La Toja stick recently but I haven't used it yet. It's going into rotation this week! :biggrin1:
