Grandfather's Adjustable

My mother was cleaning out a closet at my grandmother's house after she passed away and ran across my grandfather's old Gillette Adjustable. He passed away 22 years ago, but I still remember as a little boy watching him shave. He bought a toy plastic razor with changeable cartridges, and he'd lather me up so I could shave too.
I was wondering if someone out there would help me date the razor. It has a date code of K4. Also, what do I need to know about using it? It's not in perfect condition, although it looks to be in excellent condition for a daily use. Do the higher numbers mean a closer shave, or less close? Anything else I should know about adjustables in general? Thanks for the help gents!

I'm shaving with my grandfather's adjustable too! I find it pretty cool that I'm shaving with this tool that my grandfather shaved with...they were truly built to last

I think that it is fantastic that this razor stayed in the family and will be lovingly used by generations, instead of winding up on E-Bay, going to the highest bidder.

(don't get me wrong, without the bay, I'd have a much smaller collection than I do now)

Congratulations-that's a lucky find! In case you don't know, don't use any abrasive cleaners on it. Just use scrubbing bubbles to get the soap off (if any), and use a cleaner called MAAS to polish it using part of an old t-shirt and Q-tips. It may end up looking far better than you ever thought it could.

My grandfather also used to use an DE of some sort, although he died before I even knew what it was. But I'm currently trying to track it down through my family, I really do hope it wasn't sold off. I think it would be awesome to shave with a piece of family history.

Just think how cool it would be for you r grandkids, when they shave with their great great grandfathers Fatboy:)

I wish I had a razor from one of my grandfathers or my father. They all started shaving with electrics quite early, though, or had a beard, and there are no more DE razors that belonged to them to be found anywhere. I tried, without success.

Thanks for the posts so far guys. Darjeeling, I'll get pics up when I'm able to. Looking forward to whatever else can be discovered about it from the photos.
