Got my Rolls blade back from Bayamontate

And gave it a try this afternoon on a few days growth. It was a really interesting experience as I have never used a Rolls set up before. It has the same sort of control as a de or se razor, but you can attack at a huge range of angles vs those. The edge Bayamontate put on was very sharp and shaved in a very smooth, mellow way. It felt non-threatening to the point where I did an atg pass with it. Chin needed touch ups, but I am well out of practice with straight style blades so I guess it is to be expected. The rest was bordering on bbs. I gave it a strop and will see how it fares next time out. I don't know if he does honing on the side proper, but I would recommend Bayamontate for any stubborn jobs you may have.

Thank you KCB, I'm glad you like the edge on your Rolls. While I could have made it more aggressive I wanted to keep the Sheffield feel.

I actually do hone for hire but do it without any pomp and circumstance.

I'm actually interested in getting a Rolls razor but the ones on eBay are sort of beat though. I honed a 7 day set of Rolls blades for someone a few months ago and like the concept. I think there's way to make the in-house "como se llama" strop thing more affective, faded CrOx, concentrated on one side of the stropping area but gradually less toward the other, on a hard felt or foam medium, just thinking out loud.

I haven't seen any cheap ones in good nick in nyc in forever. Only cheap one was a $10 early imperial with a silver plate case that was all tarnish, a broken friction clip assembly and a blade with no guard... Yet the hone was pristine! Go figure. Antique dealers charge a bloody fortune for them here for some reason...

I was able to get the center pin cylinder out of mine so I can attach the blade to a stick, but the problem I have now is that the cylinder is in contact with my benchtop hone and strop. How were you guys able to get around that / how do you hone and strop the blades? If my current predicament doesn't make sense I'll take a photo for you later

I think the thing to do would be to have someone with metalworking skills made a long sleeve for the spine to slip in like the old wedge safety razors included and mate that to a set screw and metal handle for honing/stropping

$wedge002.jpg like these... but for a rolls with the guard removed

I was talking about this on pm that I was surprised rolls didn't offer one for ppl who lived overseas and did damage worse than the case can cope with. A bit shortsighted of them.

This is what drove me to straights. I got a few Rolls sets and wanted to shave with them. Couldn't get them sharp enough with the built in hone so I bought some lapping film. Got it sharp running the Rolls blade down the film with my fingers but flipping it over every lap was a pain. I was about to fabricate a knock off of Slash's tool when it hit me that I was really just making a Rube Goldberg straight. At that point I bought a straight to try and haven't shaved with anything else since.

I need to contact him....and all this time I thought he was just a tremendous musician...who da thunk it?
Yes - it's true.

Plus, not only does Baya hone, he hones extremely well; he's a rock star actually.

And yeah - no pomp, no circumstance.

I've never seen the whole razor, I request that they send me the blade section only.

Really? Never? They are AWESOME in person.... They look great and just have tremendous old school build quality. It's just an incredibly cool solution to a problem that never necessarily existed in the first place.

The way the whole thing is set up, and given how many survived, I'm surprised there haven't been homebrew RR solutions/enhancements.

Despite the fact that they have been around for close to 100 years, even the early ones I've seen look like they were butchered by their owners.
