What's new

Got cocky and paid the price

I've been DE/Wet shaving for about 3 months now, most of it with my Gillette Super Speeds and a few weeks with a Parker 82R all are fairly mild razors. Well yesterday I got my first adjustable a very nice 1965 Gillette Slim and I got a wonderful shave yesterday set at 6,6, and 4 I would say a shade better than DFS but not BBS. Well I figured the more aggressive the closer and easier a BBS shave would be so I tried 8, 7 and7 and a few things went wrong. First of all my new brush was shedding like crazy and I had hairs in everything and instead of moving on and getting my older brush I skimped on the cream and lather. Next for some reason I was very heavy handed and instead of stopping and readjusting I kept plowing thru and nicked my self a few times. OK you would think after WTG at 8 I would have learned no I just rammed thru at 7 on my XTG still heavy handed then being stubborn and not wanting to be wimpy I hammered home the ATG on 7, now my face is sore even my cheeks and I have at least 5 good nicks and a few smaller ones(can you say a very active styptic pencil). :a46:

Live and learn live and learn. The bright side is I love my Slim I will be adding another one plus a FB soon and I think I learned my lesson the hard way slow down and don't rush and dont think you are better than you truly are.:a15:

Get yourself some Post Shave Balm, that will help in situations like this. Your not alone when it comes to being heavy handed, I have that trouble too when in a hurry. That's why I keep a bottle of Nivea Post Shave Balm handy. It works great.

Great advice I think ill get some of the Nivea I live right around the corner from both a Walgreens and CVS.

I'm still healing up from my first adjustable experience. I haven't shaved in about a week as I think shaving will make healing take longer.

live and learn and pay for it! Oh yeah. Patience is the key for me. If one enjoys the process..... The Slim is a good teacher indeed. And will teach you much. Blade angle, getting tough spots, getting sensitive spots... Stick with it for a while you'll be well rewarded Enjoy!

there's nothing wimpy about shaving on a lower setting - it's about what works not how much pain you can stand. I do a 3pass on my slim set to 3 and get great shaves (DFS most of the time). any higher than 3 and I get rashy and a lot of weepers.

dude, take your time, dial back the setting a little and don't use pressure. take the time to get to know your razor. shaving is hair reduction via multiple passes. I agree with coolbus18, the slim is a great razor, take your time and it will be your friend! best of luck.

Well today was great! I slowed down and had a great 3 pass DFS plus shave with my slim set to 6,6 and 5. What a difference a day makes!

I had a horrible first experience with my slim as well. Started on 5, dialed back to 4 and it didn't help a bit. I haven't tried it since. I had a much better but still average overall shave with the Fat Boy set at 3. I like the head profile and feel of the slim better, so I need to try it again. I've just been a wimp honestly.

Good luck dialing your Slim in.
