What's new

goose?

I was wondering if anyone out there might know where I might find a domestic goose to cook for the holidays. I've looked online at some, since I can't seem to find any locally, but OUCH $160 for a 10-12lb bird?

I was looking for domestic goose. I've have wild goose before (thought it was a little too gamey).

I am not sure about the rest of the country but here in the mid section of the country, you can start looking for capon and other fowl about this time of year. I like goose, duck, and other dark meat game birds. I find duck infinitely superior to domestic farm raised turkey drumsticks. Wild turkey is another matter. It is much more flavourful than the pen raised variety. Goose is rather expensive here in the stores. Frozen birds run seem to run about 24-34 dollars in our local supermarkets.

Regards, Todd

Perhaps your local grocer or meat cutter could order one. I'd ask. I can get them in Omaha; haven't because that would be too much bird for my wife and I.

It's been a long time since I purchased a goose from the grocery, and it certainly wasn't that expensive. I recall spending about $20 or perhaps a bit more for one.

Canadian geese are great table fair if they have been cleaned properly. Roasted skin on in the oven they come out tasting like roast beef. It is dark meat after all.

That's a bit high, but they can be found at some shops here in the DC region for about half that price or less. Balducci's comes to mind...

I know that some of our higher end grocers handle goose around the holidays, don't remember the price though. I'd also check out your local butcher/meat shop they maybe able to get you one for a lot cheaper then from the internet.

On thinking about it more, we use to raise geese on the farm where I grew up. Don't know where you live, but could there be farmers around who raise geese? Might even check your newspaper ads; here we would find it under "Good Things to Eat."

Around here both Meijers and Kroger stock goose around the holidays. I serve roast goose every Christmas Eve.

My inlaws are originally from the north and apparently domestic goose was an easy thing to come by for the holidays. I was trying to surprize them with one this year and unfortunately I don't think Houston is an easy place to find one, especially with "the goose hunting capital" being so close (which is where I usually go to get goose).

Look local. Any family farms that raise poultry should be indexed at that site. Often they don't advertise and you have to contact them to see what they have available. It is worth the trouble, though; all the meat I have ever gotten from local farms has been delicious. Good luck!

Come to Illinois, or Wisconsin. There will be thousands of them shortly. They are not terribly difficult to come by.

They also are not that great to eat, pretty greasy, in my opinion. YMMV

No kidding! I live in a "rural" housing development in western Wisconsin and it is not uncommon for me to wake up, look out my bedroom window maybe 100-200 yards, hear shotguns, see blaze orange men, and geese falling from the sky.

I have two bird dogs (a vizsla and a weimaraner) and I can tell that their instincts are tormenting them. They'll hear the shots, go on point, and then wonder why I'm not giving them instructions. They want to go to work!

So yes, we are goose abound up here in Wisconni. I've got dibbs on any that land in my yard.
