On the occasions I would use a professional barber to cut my head, I trusted a guy named Gary. He ran a shop called The Men's Room in Rochester, MN. One of the things that made me feel like a kindred soul with him was that he had a great collection of Safety Razors, brushes and old mirror stands.
This was right at the start of my own collecting razors, so I would inquire about his collection, and admire all of the work that seemed to have went into it. He would show me different things, and tell me about what differentiates it from that, and how you can tell whats good and not.
To stay on topic; I remember a specific piece of equipment from our talks that I coveted and I assume he did also because it seemed to have a special place in his collection. It was a Hone. I don't remember what specific brand it was but what I remember him telling me was "If you find one no matter the price tag GRAB IT! Of course look it over first to assure it doesn't have any cracks or chips in it, and then GRAB IT!"
To make this long story longer, after many, many trips to various shops I finally found one. And remembering his direction, I GRABBED IT! To make my deal even sweeter, the maker of this particular Hone happened to be from Minnesota. However, since finding it, I have tried repeatedly to get some history on the maker and the brand. And have come up empty. So--tell me what you think.
