Going Old School (the cheap stuff)....

Going through the drugstore line up of aftershaves. I've tried Clubman, Clubman Vanilla, Proraso, Cella, and now Aqua Velva Ice Blue! I REALLY like Aqua Velva Ice Blue! Any other recommendations? Only the cheap stuff for this tour!

I love a splash of Proraso Eucalyptus & Menthol.

I’ll typically chose a balm of a very different scent to go on top - or the Proraso grey/white balm, which is neutral in terms of scent.

I find the Euc & Menthol splash to be very compatible with other more strongly scented balms though and with various colognes, and gives a really nice finish to the shave, and is not expensive.

Edit: you said you tried it - oh well - I’ll leave this here anyway :)

I love the scent of AV. I used it back in the 1960s. I bought a glass bottle a few years after joining B&B, but I'd gotten older by then, and the scent was too strong and seemed to last forever. I tried cutting some with 2/3 witch hazel, but it was still too strong. I PIFd the remainder to another member. At my age, I prefer an aftershave that dissipates in an hour or so, and stick with Captain's Choice or Ogallala.

Strong aftershaves or colognes remind me of working in an office in the 1980s. We had a higher-up whose cologne was so strong that you could smell him before you saw him. Even the secretaries made fun of him behind his back. I never wanted to be that guy.

There's something very comforting about smells from my childhood. I'm pretty sure either my grandfather or a few of my uncles wore AV back in the day.

The Lather Maestro
Aqua Velva is an old barber shop CLASSIC. I'm 67 and I remember when they shaved the back of your neck after a haircut, even as a kid. Typically they'd do an alcohol splash after, and it was invariably Pinaud Clubman (most common), AV Ice Blue (next most common), and Lilac Vegetal (least common of the three, but still common in barber shops). They'd usually follow with a neck dust of Pinaud Clubman talc.

One of my favorite summer shaves is TOBS Peppermint, followed by AV Ice Blue, followed by a Clubman talc duster. Did that this morning, as a matter of fact. AV Ice Blue was a fave as a younger guy, still stock it, although it's in a rotation of about ten AS splashes.

Big fan of Brut (Dad) and Old Spice (Gramps and a close Uncle).
Always thought both my Grandfather's wore Old Spice until I smelled Clubman. That was my Dads dad. It has become a favorite for me.

All 3 will always be in my drawer!

I'm 67 also. The Barbershop I frequent still does the hot lather and razor on the back of the neck followed by a brush with Pinaud Talc. Amazing.
