Gin Rickey as summer drink?

Does anyone else here enjoy a Gin Rickey as a lighter alternative to a Gin & Tonic? I just crush a half lime in the glass, add ice, add gin and top with club soda.

Any tips or twists to your recipe?

That sounds pretty good. Why don't you do a pictorial for the classic cocktails series? I'm sure our resident cocktail expert Pat would approve.

I like my Rickeys half gin, half vodka. 1:1:1 when including the lime juice. A lot of Rickeys one might encounter which are made with 100% gin more closely resemble a Collins, with the only exception being substituting lime for lemon. Experimenting with bitters usually works well, and sometimes when feeling particularly frisky I might substitute Cointreau for the vodka (sans soda, this drink has a decidedly emasulating moniker, so order it by recipe if you must).

Hi Pat. As always, good information. I really like Rickey's. Better acually than the more famous Collins. It is the brightness of the lime juice. Mine are usually as dry as a bone since I add no sugar syrup to them. I don't know if the orginal of the species called for sweetener but I rarely use it. The lime and soda make a clean, dry mixture. Cointreau? Sounds good to me and may be a way to take a bit of the astringent edge off the mixture. Vodka? Not so much for me but I wondered if you are using it to simply subdue the botanicals of the gin? Thanks.

Regards, Todd

Hard to say. I don't have it right next to me at this moment, but I'm 99.999% certain my first bar book had that specified, and I just started making them that way assuming an all-gin was essentially a Collins with lime. It's supposed to be a light drink, and I'm certainly not one to ever shy away from gin botanicals.

This does sound good - I have a bottle of boodles that I will crack open next weekend and give it a try.
