Gillette Tech vs Merkur 34C

This is my first post. I've done a little searching, so I hope this post doesn't ruffle any feathers.

I've been using a 1973 Gillette Tech with Derby blades for a few years now, on and off, alternating with a Gillette Mach 3. I like the shave I get with the DE and would like to use a DE razor more often, so...

I've been wanting to upgrade my razor and have been thinking about a Merkur 34C based on reviews both on this forum and elsewhere.

Can I expect a significant difference between the Gillette Tech and the Merkur 34C, and if so, what specifically? Would there be any reason to stay with the Tech and forget the 34C?

Again, I hope this post is acceptable to all who read it. And if not, I'll just say, "Hello."

I have the Merkur 42 (safety bar) and two Gillette Tech razors (one a Ranger and one a prewar Fat Handle). I think the head on the Merkur is the same as the 34C, but others have more knowledge on this than I.

IMO, while they are all very mild, the Ranger is the mildest, then the Fat Handle, with the Merkur being very slightly more aggressive than the FH Tech. Your Tech is supposedly milder than the prewar Tech versions, according to many of the experts who post here.

Welcome to B&B!

I think you will like the Merkur 34C. The Edwin Jagger DE89 is similarly heavy-but-forgiving. Both of these razors are heavier than your Tech and will feel a bit different when you shave.
I do not mean to offend you, but I would also try a different blade. The Astra SP is loved by many here.

The 34C is a good razor, but more aggressive than your Tech. Expect to feel more blade against your skin when using the 34C. It will also be a bit heavier. Honestly, you're really not upgrading by trying the 34C. You're just trying something different. Quality wise, Techs are really well made razors.

Welcome to B&B. Something you may wish to think about during your 34c decision is how the Tech DE you have been using works for you. If your shaves are comfortable and last long enough through the day that you are happy, then you may find that you do not "upgrade" that much. If you are looking for a different experience and want something with a bit more bite to it then you will be heading in the right direction.

Enjoy your adventure.

... +1

Also, the 34c is a 2-piece razor, which I find a cool feature and it's slightly more comfortable (for me) to change the blade. Others don't care, and some maybe even dislike 2-piece razors for whatever reason, who knows.

+10
I would suggest a Crystal brand blade as well. I have more than a couple Tech's and they are milder than the 34C. Get a better blade, and they give a very easy, comfortable shave, meaning somewhat tolerant of less-than-perfect user technique.
