Gillette Super Thin Platinum - I tried to love it but.

I know that YMMV, but wow, I am confused how others can get such great shaves out of this blade. I really wanted to like this blade after I read the reviews of others. However, I am not sure if those reviews were for the older non-platinum version (the image on the right). I bought my first pack from razorbladesandmore, and I tried three or four blades and they were un-bearable. I thought perhaps it was a bad batch. So I ordered a second pack from Bullgoose. They had the image on the right on their site, but they sent the Platinums. I tried a blade out of this second pack. I wanted to have a contest between the Super Thin and a Personna blue lab. After just two shaves it was no contest. I had to ditch the super thin as it was pulling far too much (while the Personna Lab was very smooth).

Three pass - two blade - oil shave
How I test is I use a three pass two blade shave using a EJ89 to take out the bramble, then a Weishi 9306 to ATG and polish. I also shave with oil. In my normal shaving I use blades that are best suited to the two razors (such as an Astra SP in the EJ and a Feather in the Weishi). When I am testing blades, I shave half my face with the two blades in their respective razors, then switch the blades for the other half (I also prep each half separately with steam and hot towels so the whiskers on both sides are equally soft). This way I see how the blades perform in different roles. So if a blade performs badly in both roles, I am not ordering more of those blades. And that is what happened with the Super Thin Platinum. I have tested at least 5 super thins and just could not get past the second or third shave.

I also take care that my blades do not oxidize between shaves. I clean them under the faucet, swish them in rubbing alcohol to get the water off, then dip the razor head and blade in a small cup with oil enough to cover the razor head. Clean, no moisture, and no air. This way when I pick up my blade again it is in the same state I left it.

Well, for the third save in this ‘contest’ I swapped out the Super Thin for a Rapira Super Stainless and it was every bit as good as the Personna. I will continue the contest with the Rapira even though the Personna is down two half shaves.

Well I am not sure how to order a Thai verses Vietnam as I ordered the Thai version from Bullgoose and they sent me the platinum. I am also not sure if these are actually made in china and just packaged for Vietnam and Thailand. Either way, what I got for both orders was the package on the left.

A couple of months ago I tried the two versions in your pics side by side and after having used 3 blades each I could still not tell the difference between them.

Both are made in China btw; Flying Eagle in Shanghai makes them, as well as the Malaysian Nacets and many more Gillettes for the Asian market. I like them but they are not the sharpest around and I agree the Labs are smoother and sharper.

I like most Gillette blades but the Super Thin I don't care for. The quality control seems to be an issue with them. To me, they compare to the Lord or Derby blades with the Derby being a better blade.
