Gillette red knob antique shop cleanup

I found this little fella at a local antique store. It was thoroughly tarnished, had white residue all over it, and I don't know a whole lot about antique DEs, but I picked it up to ask for a price anyway.

Expecting the usual antique shop, "Oh that's very old and rare. $50 please.", I was astonished when the guy said $2. SOLD.

So I took it home, gave it a little soak in Fantastik with scrubbing bubbles, then hit it with some Mother's mag and aluminum polish.

I think it cleaned up pretty nicely! How'd I do?

The bottom is stamped A4. Am I reading the wiki page right that it's a 1955 Red Tip Super Speed?

Looks nice for a $2 red tip. Looks like it is missing one of the side plates but that is no big deal. Enjoy your shaves with it. They are very nice shaving razors.

Nice Work! Sometimes the green haze can be hiding ugly things underneath. Yours however looks just great! Enjoy! The red tip is a fins shaver!

Nice job cleaning it up
Yes, A4 is forth quarter of 1955, first year for the red tip
For $2 and a bit of elbow grease you now have a fine shaver, congrats!

hey for $2 you can't complain, even if you only use it to work on your cleaning/polishing technique. nice find and great job on the cleanup.

Thanks all! The doors are loose and it's missing one of the side plates, but it tightened down on the blade just fine. Going to test it out with a shave tomorrow night.
