Gillette M3 Power class action suit settlement

In case you missed it, Gillette recently agreed to settle a class action suit about the M3 Power razor advertising claims. Here is a quote from the settlement web site:

"There is a proposed settlement with The Gillette Company (“Defendant”) in a class action lawsuit, In re M3Power Razor System Marketing & Sales Practices Litigation, Civil Action No. 05-11177. The case is about Gillette’s advertising for the M3Power Razor.

The lawsuit challenges the accuracy of Gillette’s advertisements for the M3Power Razor. Plaintiffs claim Gillette’s advertisements that the M3Power Razor “raises or stimulates hair up and away from the skin” were false and misleading and violated consumer-related laws in the USA and Canada. In mid-2005, Gillette deleted those representations from its ads. Gillette denies all the allegations but has agreed to the proposed settlement to resolve this class action.

The proposed settlement offers benefits (including cash refunds, cash rebates, or a new Gillette manual men’s razor) to persons in the United States or Canada who purchased or otherwise acquired for use and not resale an M3Power Razor in the United States between May 1, 2004 and September 30, 2005, or in Canada between May 1, 2004 and October 31, 2005, and who submit valid and timely claims."

If you are part of the class, go to the web site for further information about filing a claim.

Yup, what he said. I did one of those for something with microsoft one time, forgot about it and like 3 years later got a check for iirc $0.80. I think I threw it away because it would have cost more in gas to go to the bank than it was worth. But I'm sure the lawyers made out:lol:!

I thought the M-3 Power worked pretty well. I alway's thought it shaved better than the M-3 manual razor. I'm gonna send mine back and get the refund.

Unfortunately, the only ones benefiting this type of class action suit are the attorneys involved. The consumer gets little benefit and, ultimately, the settlement costs get passed on to them through higher prices. I was a member of a music club and was sent a coupon for a discount on the purchase of my next CD. The cost was still more than they routinely offered with their monthly discounts. Within months, the base cost of buying a CD went up. Although I supposedly "won" in this settlement, like all of the record club members, in the long run I lost. While I understand the need to provide negative incentives against false advertising, I hate the idea of the consumer being punished while a legal firm receives a windfall. Perhaps some of the attorneys here have a better spin on this and I respect the work that many of them do. I understand the benefits of our system but just don't see it in those situations where the tangible "benefits" to the consumer are so small due to the dilution of so many members in this type of class action suit.

The lawsuit-happy trend in our society gets old. Virtually all advertising includes hype; who actually suffered, lost something, or got injured due to the ads? The company will simply pass on the expense to everyone else. I'm included in the group mentioned, but I enjoyed the razor for what it was and have no right to pursue money from them.

Well, if Gillette doesn't print "Do not eat" on the cartridge package then you know that sooner or later someone will do it. And then sue because Gillette didn't warn him.

new Gillette manual men’s razor...

You are happily using your M3, decide to take up Gillette on this offer, and they send you a Gillette Fusion ProGlide!! DARN IT!!!

Gillette thus potentially benefits from a lawsuit that was designed to hurt them. Scratches Head.:blink: Something is not right here.

I remember that BMG CD suit. I remember laughing at the offer as well, their "payment" was truly a pittance. Of course, I was buying $500 a year in CDs at the time, so I was getting their best customer discounts (probably you were in a similar situation). I stopped buying about three years ago when I discovered Napster and eMusic where I can get the music for half the price.

About two years ago there was a smokeless tobacco class action suit, I did not apply as I had never been a consumer of it. But I informed some friends and co-workers about it who were consumers. Four of them applied. About two months ago, after they had all forget all about it. they all received checks for approx $500.

Although this has nothing to do with the Gillette suit, just because something is a class action suit, does no automatically mean that your settlement will be inconsequential.

Well, mine is broken and doesn't vibrate anymore, so this is really a no-brainer for me!

:w00t: I'm gonna have $13 six months from now!!! :w00t:

Same here. There was a class action suit against ATI concerning their video cards. I ended getting a $250 check from them, but yet only paid $150 for the video card a few years earlier. Sometimes it pays off.

Don't forget, our laws are in place to protect the absent minded consumer :001_huh:

I wonder if they are going to drag AOS into it too being that they make a $150 razor handle with the "motor". Ha! Never thought that it did much, though, I do like the Mach 3 Turbo carts.

Make sure you spend the nickel you get wisely.

Spend it wisely? Absolutely!

For the $16.25 in Canadian dollars plus $2 for postage, that will go halfway to the purchase of a new Edwin Jagger DE89L razor.

I'd say that is an equitable trade.

I'd say it is good and I am happy to get my $18 and change in the mail a few days ago for something I stopped using years ago. The only reason I had it was because I'm a hoarder!

Doesn't go anywhere near covering my RAD/SCAD/SSAD, but hey, its a start :)
