Gillette British Old Type Questions

I've got a few questions about this set. When I first got it, it looked pretty normal/run of the mill to me, but then I looked at it a little more an noticed some strange things. So now, I've got a few questions. Below are pictures of the set alone and some next to a US Gillette Old Type from 1919 out of a military set with a J serial number (just what I had on hand for comparison). So here are the couple odd things and differences I noticed. Any information on this set would be appreciated.

1. The box says made in England, but the razor is stamped made is USA. Is this normal or a mismatch? I've heard that no factories were in the UK initially so razors were made in Boston and shipped to UK. Correct?
2. The plating is very different. I tried to capture it in the photographs. The British one almost seems to be chrome plated on the head cap and underside of the comb (not sure about top). handle appear to be the standard silver. Maybe its just really good silver plating, but if it is, then I've never seen anything like it.
3. Rounded edges on the corner of the British head cap versus pointed 90 degree angle edges on the US version.
4. No Pat Nov. 15' 04 on handle on British version like the US version.
5. No serial number on British version.
6. Rounder neck lip on US version where it connects to the handle tube.
7. Different knurling on handle tube. Diamond type on British version, whereas smoother more barber bole type on US version.

It looks to me like someone put an American post-patent Old Type (1921-1928/29) into the case from a British Empire Set. The differences between the two razors you've got there are entirely consistent with that change over -- thicker cap, no serial number or patent inscription, rougher finish.

That was my guess.

So what is supposed to be in there? A British made NEW, Goodwill, Old Type?

This can't be a mere coincidence but i just looked though a few of my razors as i remember getting one of those cases a brown'ish one in a lot from a few months ago and have recently only got round to looking at it and i have the exact same thing as you never noticed the case said made in england...

Interesting, you should post some pics when you get a chance.

And, I should have thought before I asked. There is definitely supposed to be an Old Type in the case because there are 3 holes in the case for the stem and posts to go into.

I will do tomorrow bit late to set stuff up now but my case is the same 3 holes for the head and plate to fit perfectly...
