Gillette Blacks - Whoah!

So, I feel like I am a bit late to the party in trying this blade, but boy am I glad I did!

From reading the many threads on the Gillette Black Super Platinum from India, I knew it would be very smooth and sharp. I had an idea of what it might be like in my head: the smoothness of a Personna Med Prep combined with the sharpness of a Feather. Turns out, that's a fairly accurate description.

However, nothing could have prepared me for the shave I was about to experience nor my reaction to it....

The shave was just plain eerie. There, I said it: eerie as in strange, weird, kind of bizarre...not at all what I expected.

Why? Because it didn't feel like I was shaving. The blade kind of just whisked across my face. I could barely feel it. Zero tugging or pulling. I couldn't even feel or hear the hairs being cut.

Instead, my facial hair kind of just magically disappeared.

I guess, I'm just kind of used to, and like having some sort of feedback from the blade.

Now this only has been my first shave with the Black. Way too early for a sound judgement.

I suppose, many would say this is the ideal blade for the properties that I have just described. And many people do in fact say just that.

For me, now, I'm just a deer in headlights. Kind of a shock and awe thing.

It's definitely different from any other blade I've tried. My favorite? I don't know yet.

Anyone else have this same experience with the Black?

Yep, this one's on the "love it" tier for me. Right up there with the Personna Med, tied for modern favorite.

I am a big fan of the Blacks. One of my top few blades. I don't find them to be any sharper that Personna med/labs and not quite as smooth. I get the experience you are describing from Gillette Silver Blues. Blades are most deffinetly a ymmv thing.

Just used these for the first time and it blew the Astras I was using out of the water. The effort was similar or a little better to the Astras, but the smoothness was much much better with the blacks. My top blade so far.

My Holy Trinity of DE razor blades is 7 o'clock Black, Personna Med Prep, and Polsilver SI's. One day, maybe Oscroft will figure a way to match them against each other.

I love the blacks but another blade I use is the Indian Permasharp (Indian greens) which are just a small step down from the blacks but a whole lot cheaper. The greens are my daily blade while the blacks come out on occasion.

They have been my go to blade foe months now, if I had to pick only one blade this would be the one. I love meds, Astras and voskhods also but these blades are consistent and never fail me

I agree. I love both. I ordered about 1000 blacks just in case...

My favorite blade aside from the Permasharp Greens, also from India. Sharp, smooth, but also forgiving. They blow the European blades away for me.

I love 'em too. However, I find them very close, maybe just a tad better, than Astra SP and Personna Supers. At twice the cost of the later blades, I just have to pass on the Blacks. I may splurge one of these days but have a couple years of blades on hand now.

P.S. I loaded a "Spoiler" that came in a pack with a recent vintage Gillette score. I'm still enjoying that blade after 5 shaves.

There are so many blades out there. What do the Gillette Blacks look like? Can someone post an Amazon link so I know what to look for? Thanks.

I bought 100 of them to try (yeah, I know but they were a good price) and I just don't like them.
I think I might be the only one who doesn't.

I am really worried about getting the blacks. I have a feeling they will make my 200 Astra SPs redundant. They are already in peril after the Voskhods recently overtook them in my estimation.

Love the Black Super Platinums. The Blue Super Platinums are pretty good as well, and a little less expensive than the Blacks.
