What's new

Gillette 1930's NEW or Red & Black?

Can someone help me identify this razor I picked up at a flea market. Looks like a NEW (only thing I can compare it to is the Otto Roth, however mine says Gillette where the Otto Roth normally is). Also looks like an R&B however the smooth part right below the neck on the handle is longer.

Welcome to B&B!

A razor without a case can usually only be placed into a family, like NEW or Old Type. You have a NEW, 1932 or later because of the patent marks, with the less common thin bar handle. It has a long smooth band below the collar, which is even less common. But after Gillette bought the Otto Roth company, there was probably some intermingling of designs and parts.

There is probably little point speculating about the original set. Gillette frequently combined parts in unexpected ways.

Try it, I promise you will like it!
Already did. The outer comb on the one side is bent, but using the other side, it shaved like a dream (then again, I knew it would, that's why I sourced it out at the flea market). Going to have the comb straightened, nicks filled, and it replated/revamped.

If you going to have it re-plated, put plenty of heat in and get it cherry red. Straightening should be easy then.

Welcome to B&B! If you haven't already done so, I suggest you check out Achim's (a B&B member) website; Google "mr_razor", click on "Gillette NEW" and familiarize yourself. As for the bent outer teeth, it looks pretty minor to me and I would shave with it as is. (See if the re-plater will straighten it, the process can be difficult if you haven't done it before.)
