Getting my scuttle hot

How do you guys do it? I have just been using hot tap water, but it doesn't seem to be getting my lather warm. Should I be using an electric kettle to get the water boiling hot?

An electric kettle is great but do not use boiling water. Boiling water is going to ruin your lather and a lot of people feel that it will damage the brush also. I keep mine set to the lower side of the dial, I'm guessing 140-150 degrees F. Hotter than my tap, cooler than a cup of coffee. Fill my scuttle and soak the brush in it, take my shower, and get a perfect temp through the shave. Vegetable and tallow soaps are more heat tolerant than melt and pours so those I just crank it to the lowest.

Fill your scuttle with COLD tap water, both inner and outer bowls, set it in the microwave long enough to boil, then pour out the boiling water and refill the outer bowl with hot tap water. This will warm up the ceramic itself, but as others have noted, you don't want to keep it at boiling temps.

Prior to doing this, you might check with the artisan who made the scuttle in the first place, to make sure it is microwave safe. But I think that most of them will pass the test.

Kcaps...which scuttle are you using?

Depends on the scuttle some are easy and work great and some are poor.

I'm not sure I would microwave the entire scuttle. Better to prewarm with hot water and then pour boiling water into it.

I totally agree with a previous post by SUNA. It really depends on what kind of scuttle you have. I own a Schwarzweisskeramik scuttle and I pre-warm it with hot tap water let it sit for a couple of minutes and then re-fill with super hot tap water. This works like a charm for warm luxurious lather.

I heard and read many reviews on the georgetown scuttle and it does not perform as good as others and that is why I use my SWK-Lrg. Im also waiting for my moss. I hear that one and the dirty bird work wonders.

Let us know so we can help you solve your problem!

Thanks for the advice so far.

I am using a Georgetown G5 scuttle. It looks great, and I love it, but I get warmer lather by partly submerging a mug in the sink of hot water.

As for the microwave, I am not sure it is practicle for me to use the microwave upstairs every night then bring the hot scuttle to my bathroom downstairs..... A kettle is more likely.

I agree with the advice to avoid boiling water. My water is about 165 degrees when microwaving 3 cups for 4 minutes, and although the Georgetown, DirtyBird, Moss, Becker, and Schwarzweisskeramik had different results with reservoir capacity and heat retention tests (see Reviews), they all worked pretty much the same for me.

My tap water just doesn't get hot enough and I initially blamed the scuttle. I started with a G5 and before I figured out a way to get the water at the proper temperature I needed I ordered another. The truth is that I live in a semi-tropical climate and it is a waste of money to have the hot water heater at a high setting.

I got a $4 candy thermometer at Wal-Mart and after I got the desired results I used it to find out that 165 degrees was good for me and it doesn't appear to hurt the brush or scuttle.

If you use a kettle you've got to remember to turn it off when finished or else the water will boil out and cause some problems!

I...

Fill the scuttle with hot tap water (I'm paranoid about cracking)

Boil a little water in a kettle. ffwwweeeeEEEEEEEE!

Add the same amount of hot water to the boiling kettle.

Drain the tap water, add kettle water! I can adjust to the perfect temperature by adding more or less tap water after the kettle boils.

Fill the sink and submerged scuttle with the hottest water I can get out of the tap, shower, jump out and empty sink and scuttle, refill scuttle with hottest water.

I used microwaved water this morning, just to test out and it worked amazingly well. Hot lather for 4 passes! I also tried my new GFT Lime cream, so it was a great shave. BBS for sure. I was faceturbating at the wedding my wife dragged me to!
