What's new

Getting better performance with my boar lately...

Over the last couple of weeks I have been using my boar brush almost exclusively....an Omega Pro 49. I have a Chubby 2 that has lathered up pretty well on the face and in the bowl.....but the boar just kicks its *** in the ease, speed, and quality of lathering....and it just keeps getting better. Tonight I whipped up a nice ARKO lather that was so smooth and creamy...PERFECTION! On the other hand...last night the Chubby 2 was only able to whip up something only about half as good as tonight's with the same effort. This has been the case for the last several weeks as well...boar outperforms the badger!

I am thinking the effort with badger is not worth it at this point. I have concluded that I am getting better quality shaves due to the better lather I am getting from my Omega boar.

I am thinking about selling the Simpson Chubby 2 and sticking with my Omega.

What do you guys think?

I think I'll take that Chubby 2! :biggrin1:

You seem to be on a road I took a couple of years ago; I moved from cheap boars to nice badgers but when I took a love for soaps and face-lathering I went back to boars (of better quality).

Without trying to fuel a boar vs. badger discussion I believe that the difference in price doesn't equal the difference in quality at all. Once broken in (and just how many end their boar journey after a few shaves with a bottom quality drugstore brush?!) a boar has a combination of qualities that are rather different from badger. It is not so much about better properties but more about what you seek in a brush. In the end both are capable of delivering a great lather but a well broken-in boar is very hard to beat in my book!!

If they didn't work well, people wouldn't buy them.

All the recent talk lately about the sterling qualities of a well broken in boar brush has made me seriously consider picking up a boar brush of my own. Mostly I just want to see what all the fuss is about. Despite all the praise, I have a hard time overcoming the mental roadblock of badger=more expensive=better. I am, of course, more than ready to be proven wrong in that regard.

The CH2 (whatever hair) has a much larger knot, requires much more soap and holds much more water, therefore despite it's reputation does require a bit more effort
with soaps. The boar hair being scrubbier extracts more soap more easily which as you've discovered allows you to generate lather from soap more efficiently.

Keep the CH2 as a cream brush if the boar floats your boat with soap
