Getting back to basics

I had the day off today, and the weather was nice, so I finally got around to testing that 35mm f1.8 I bought off BST a couple of months back. I must say, it was really enjoyable just going the minimalist route again, like when I was a student. One camera, one standard prime lens, and some time to explore. I just slung my camera, jumped on my bicycle and spent a hour or so wandering, trespassing and checking out the industrial area where I live. When I was young I used to do that sort of stuff all the time, hop in a interstate bus headed somewhere I had never been before, and then just wander around with my camera. It's a nice way to spend the day.

I think "sharp, compact and fast" were the words we used. Compact and fast we knew about and you can now add shart to the mix. Nice set David- I love shooting in that style as well and that certainly looks like a great place to hop a fence.

Great shots, David. Did you enjoy the new lens? It looks like you've nailed it pretty well for a first trip out with it!

I took a trip earlier this year and carried my smallest DSLR with one prime lens (also 35mm) versus the bag with the zoom, etc. Once I got into the rhythm of it, I reverted right back to my film days, with one prime lens and really concentrated on composition and making every shot count. I think that the combination of the seemingly endless number of frames that can be shot with a digital camera and the laziness that comes with a wide range zoom results in less thought and more lousy pictures to erase. That combination has it's moments/uses, but I do much better when I force myself back into my old (film) mentality.

Some nice work there; digital or film?

Yep, it works fine. I can see it being my go to lens for now.

Digital. But I'm like you, my head is still in the film space, so I compose the shot in camera, meter carefully, and take one frame then walk away. I still haven't even gotten into the habit of checking the image on the cameras screen (not that I can see it in the sun anyway). Then I will only do in post production what I would have been able to do in the darkroom.

Some of the best professional photographers of the '30's to the 60's were minimalists. All they would use was a 35mm Leica Rangefinder with a 50 mm Leica lens and their photography was stunning.

BTW, I like photo # 5....the chimney stacks....very good.
