What's new

Gentlemen, G&T Season has Arrived!

With the balmy dog days upon us, the time has come to increase your quinine intake (you can't be too careful about malaria, you know.) So as I type I'm kicked back with the season's first gin and tonic and a damn fine one it is. Here's my recipe.
Fill a tall glass with ice and then add:
Gilbey's Gin (to taste)
Top of with tonic water containing quinine of course
a dab of lemon juice
about a half teaspoon of vanilla abstract (I know it sounds weird but it's absolutely magic)
Stir and enjoy!

Here's to ya Gents! Life is good!

Yessir... G&Ts are fantastic this time of year. I'd recommend anyone who's interested in participating in the Spirit of the Month try their Hendricks with a slice of cucumber instead of the traditional citrus. Otherwise, my own recipe calls for a small dash of lime juice. You're right about the vanilla too -- makes for a very interesting drink... just don't overdo it!

A couple more of these and I'll be ready to experiment with a dash of Florida Water :biggrin:

Two's up! Man, these things are just dangerously smooth. No Florida Water yet, but my wife put some Florida Water in the bath tub and the cat seemed to enjoy drinking it alot (oddly enough he slept very well that night)

You know, no matter what else I try I always come back to this grand old drink. I have already had a few this year even though our spring really did last through the first week of June. Since then we had three straight weeks of 95F temperatures and the G&T is so effective at alleviating my misery during summertime in cattle country.

I love them bone dry and the mix of the tonic and London dry gin is just smashing. I will have to try your vanilla addition. Methinks this may be a sort of secret weapon for winning over the "I don't like gin" crowd. I am also more than a bit smitten with the notion of the Hendrick's gin. Cucumber eh? Sounds about right for a summer quencher.

Regards, Todd

You are the only person that I've come across here who admits to using Gilbey's Gin (besides me).

Quite an unpretentious sort I am. I also like VDH soaps, Kaywoodie Pipes and Prince Albert tobacco. No yuppy here by God, I enjoy simple, affordable effective solutions (i.e. I'm a cheap bastige)

I like a nice vodka tonic with a little lime, but not much of a gin fan...maybe I will have to re-visit.

Gin is my absolute favorite liquor. I am forever famous amongst my law school friends because when I was asked to buy the next round of shots, I ordered gin, and they all glared at me. It was revenge for that damn shot of jager (hate that vile stuff). G&T is my usual cocktail year round as well.

Anywho, I like to alternate between Hendrick's, Tanqueray, and Beefeater, depending on my mood.

3 ice cubes in a tumbler

1-2 shots of gin (I prefer mine strong)

Fill to 1/4 inch of the top with tonic water

Slice of lime, lemon, or if I'm in the mood, a piece of grapefruit or mandarin orange. Just a little different flavor.

I've never heard of it being made with vanilla before. I'll have to give it a try.

Going to give the vanilla a try!

But I've got a question: is vanilla 'abstract' the same as 'extract'

Is the stuff you're talking about a dark liquid with concentrated vanilla flavour?

Just want to be sure before I try it.

Yeah, same stuff, not sure why I said abstract, what's that all about?

Ah yes, the G&T, few drinks are so well balanced, smooth, and refreshing.

Never tried the vanilla thing, may have to give that a whirl

Malaria is going to be my new excuse

Can't be to careful after all. Was at a wedding last night and oddly enough the bar tender whipped up one of the best G&T's I have had in awhile....well four of them to be precise.

What's everyone's favorite Gin for their G&T?

I'm currently making my way through a bottle of Beefeater because I wanted to give it a try. My normal G&T go to has been Seagrams though. Very affordable and just blends well into a good drink.

Anyone else have a good inexpensive Gin?

We got a bunch of rain last week so the humidity is up to ridiculous and there's quite a bit of standing water. I've started therapy but may need to double down because of the increased threat of the current environmental conditions. There is apparently some historical precident for G&T's as an anti-malaria treatment, check this out:

After coming into somewhat of a renaissance with my morning rituals and reading the recipe for 1OLDGI's G&T, I had to give it a go. I bought a half pint of Tanqueray and some tonic and whipped one up. Wow it was quite good. I am pretty much a whisky guy, scotch, bourbon and irish but in an effort to have an open mind with the "OLD" things I gave this a try and am glad I did. Now for the question, How much different are the different kinds of Gin and is there a difference in the tonic waters? Does this mean I should try a martini too?

p.s. - Still isn't as good as 24 year old scotch, 3 cubes of ice, and a splash of water though.....
