Gentlemanly Restraint Until Christmas (2012 edition)

By popular request....

The holiday season is a ways away but is coming over the horizon. Soon it will be time to think about holiday parties, holiday travel, and what gifts to get the SWMBO and kids (if you have them). All of this will likely cost money.

From discussions with a few people on the board, perhaps it would be a good idea to bond together and help each other out to potentially avoid the troubles with overspending, credit cards, and having a general lack of cash for the holiday season. It should also prevent a few disagreements with the SWMBO about how much you're spending on "this hobby" right near the holidays... especially when you have 14 razors, 62 soaps and creams, 19 brushes and enough blades to see the century out.

Therefore I would like to propose, for those members interested, a period of Gentlemanly Restraint. A pledge, if you will.

The rules:
  1. Gentlemanly Restraint starts at 12:00:01am on September 15th.
  2. Gentlemanly Restraint ends at 11:59:59pm on December 24th.
  3. Start and end time are based on your local time zone. I shouldn't have to say this, but no fudging time zones to gain an advantage.
  4. Gentlemanly Restraint is restricted to shaving items only, though we encourage you to take a break from other items as well.
  5. No purchases are allowed during the restraint period. None. No purchases even if you get a gift card to WCS. If you need something you may trade for it; that's why you are a part of a community that can help you out. This also means that you have enough stuff to see out about 100 calendar days of shaving.
  6. Participation in PIFs is allowed; hopefully you can also help those in need by PIFing your unwanted and/unused kit.
  7. There are two exceptions to the purchasing of items (see rule #5):
    • B&B Group Buys, because some are limited edition and all are good deals. They must be advertised on behalf of B&B to qualify.
    • One named item of your choice. You must name the item before the start of Gentlemanly Restraint. It has to be relatively specific; no blanket statements qualify (e.g. "a razor or a brush" is too vague"). Use your best judgement here.

There are no prizes for making or breaking the pledge, but it's a matter of keeping your word and making a commitment. If nothing else your wallet will be better off.

If you're interested (or forced to be on sabbatical :001_tt2:), reply here and let us know. We'll use this thread to help each other out like the other restraint threads.

Mike I admire your fortitude. I once took a break from buying any shaving related merchandise and it was the longest day of my life. Good luck!!

I'm in. I have one custom item ordered, but don't have to pay until it's complete. Stop me if I'm wrong, but I'm going to assume that it'll be OK, as it has already been ordered...

If that won't cut it, I will not participate. If it's acceptable, I'm all in!

The only day that will be difficult is the meet-up and my day at Pasteurs in NYC... If I can survive that, I'm all good.

I'm actually going to take this one step further. I will only use Astra blades, my (new to me) TTO that's my fathers birth year, Williams Mug Shaving Soap and Family Dollar knock-off Old Spice Aftershave ( and my alum block ). I'll be off to the store first thing tomorrow to grab a new puck of Williams to start fresh for this :D

I promised to buy some lapping films whenever they are available.
and plan to buy one straight razor.I am not sure if I will go to whippeddog or bst or just a gd
but it will be one straight razor sometime soon.

My name is Jeff, and I am a shaving RAD addict...

I'm just glad I don't have ADAD (Acquisition Disorder Acquisition Disorder - the disorder were you keep acquiring acquisition disorders. it's exponentially more expensive than RAD)

I'm in. My one item is a vintage Tech. That's the one razor I would love to try. If I make a trade for one of my flair tips then I will be purchase free.

No problem with that. I don't want to have people break commitments to buying items before the restraint period starts because they're not finished yet.

Tempting fate, aren't you?

I personally won't go that far - as long as you don't buy anything you're good in my book.

yeah, I just want to see if I can do it. If I can, I might continue like that just to do what I had intended originally... shave cheaply. I'll still get a special AS or soap/cream now & then, but I'd like to just stick with one item for daily use to save money.

JCinPA

The Lather Maestro
I like this. I've been in the shave sabbatical since July 1 and have no issues. I don't need anything, and I'm not missing much. In fact, I'm enjoying using just a few lather products and I know I have enough to last out the year.

When you quit buying this stuff and just shave for a while, it's like quitting cigarettes. After a week it gets easier. After a month you never even think about it any more.

I'm in.
After a summer of frenzied, manic RAD-related purchasing - I still have unopened items - I feel the need to exercise some restraint.
The devils in my mind are screaming - NO don't do it! - but the rational part of my mind, however small it may be knows this will be the right thing to do in order to restore some semblance of balance and order to my life. If anything, this period of gentlemanly restraint will allow me to savor and enjoy my current items more.

My one item will be the Joris razor.

I will hopefully have the strength and fortitude to prevail. The RAD beast lurks within me ...

I have modified my signature to symbolize my commitment!

It's also a method to allow my fellow aficionados to monitor for any suspicious activity or posts that may imply clandestine purchasing activity.

I'm in. My one named item is the Futur that I'm planning on buying for my birthday in November. I have a new brush and a box of Med Preps heading my way next week, so I should be set for awhile.

I'm in. I badly need to use up all the perfectly good stuff I already own, before splurging on new stuff. My one exception is re-stock of Derby blades if I need to.

I have 8 razors now, and those were gained in less than 3 months. Many were given to me, so it doesn't necessarily count, but the fact is, I have plenty of stuff right now and need to save up money, especially this time of year for things that are more important.

I am in. My one item is a Y2 Super Adjustable Black Beauty, my birth year razor, and even then, unless I found it for a REALLY good deal, I still probably wouldn't get it (or if I could trade for it).

Wish me luck guys, this is gonna be rough.

Okay...I'm going to try again. My one item...a knot for a brush restore project. Heck, I may not even get it started until then. Here's what I still have coming: tub of Blenheim Bouquet cream, SMN split, XPEC split. Good luck guys!
