Futur or Progress??

Im planning to buy a Progress and i would like to know witch one is better and why?
Btw i have a Futur and im attracted to(maybe) the smaller size of the Progress.
Would it be a good choice to change to Progress or stick to my Futur?

If you like the Futur, I wouldn't get the Progress. They will end up fighting for your affections and it will get ugly. The long handled Progress and the Futur are of similiar size, with the Progress having a more classic look. Most people dismiss the Progress without even testing it's limits. It can go up to the "12" setting when most people only go up to "5". If you do get a progress, I recommend you get it here:

He already sells it with a custom stainless knob in one package. It is the cheapest way to get a progress with the custom knob. Offcourse, Bob and Mer also make nice ones.

I have the Futur and it's a great shaver.

I know you didn't ask for other suggestions, but why not a vintage Slim, or Fatboy instead?

The Head profile is different than the Merkur, and hence will probably give you an entirely different experience. Besides, in my opinion, the vintage Gillette's were built to a much higher standard of excellence, especially when compared to the Merkur adjustables, which have had known quality control issues. :thumbup1:

It doesn't speak well for the Progress when the people customizing these are now refusing to sell them as a complete unit, for fear that they will be responsible for Merkur's lack of quality control.

I have not used the Futur. I have used the Merkur Progress and I gotta say that I do like this unit. Yeah it does have some flaws but it’s livable. However, if you do decide to get a Progress I will second (rainman’s) suggestion that you check out Bullgoose. That is where I picked up my Ikon Short handle unit and I am happy with it you get both the original and upgraded spindle. Phil does sell both the Futur and Progress check him out.

Mantic likes the Progress, but has a video listing what he considers annoyances in the design of the product and how to cope with them.

Note that these are not things you have to deal with when using the Futur.

[Enabling RAD]Why does one have to be "better" in order for you to get it? From where I stand they are both good, but rather different razors. Having two good but varied razors puts some variety in your daily shaving.[/Enabling RAD]

Full disclosure: I have a Futur (sez so in my .sig) and a 38C (ditto), but the other Merkur that interests me is the Slant. But there are reasons I may not get one for a while.

I bought a Futur and hated it. Heavy, bulky, infernally ugly. The blade changing system is positively cretinous. Half the time, the cap would go flying off onto the bathroom floor, waking up my wife and annoying my dog. Sold the damn thing on ebay, and the post office lost it! Good riddance. Then got the Progress (with the Ikon knob) and am quite happy with it, although the head size is still a bit of a problem. But at least it looks like a real razor.

This is a no-brainer.

Everyone knows all razors are not created equal. Some razors are better to use. He asked which was preferred and he already has a Futur!

I want a progress myself but I REALLY don't want to deal with their finicky quality control, I don't like the "Hit or Miss" aspect.

Although the futur is a bulky razor once you get used to it and learn to respect it the shaves are wonderfull the closest i get with any of my razors, the progress is an easier razor to use and again for me great shaves and i suppose a bit quicker as well.
