What's new

From a cigarette smoker switching to pipes only, Dunhill Royal Yacht is the bomb...

I have smoked cigarettes since I was 13 years old (16 years total), and every once in a while I would buy a pack of Dunhill cigs from the newstand when they had them in stock. They were delicious. That being said, if you are going to take the plunge from not smoking cigs (a masochistic endeavour) to smoking a pipe once in a while... Dunhill's Royal Yacht mixture worked for me. Don't worry about the pipe. Grab yourself a cheap cob, dry it (the tobacco) for about 30 mins, and smoke away. Don't be afraid to take a couple inhales at first. It is pretty strong stuff. It has a little more flavor than your average cig, but I guarantee you will love it. If you don't want to buy the Dunhill, Prince Albert and Carter Hall are good substitutes. Just do yourself a favor and don't start out with Captain Black White. This is just my two cents, YMMV.

P.S. I love CBW more than you could know, but most cig smokers would probably not like it as a substitute.

I find that most aromatics are like smoking scented air.

Captain Black White actually has some prominent vanilla flavour, but there's no real tobacco taste to me. The nicotine levels are really weak, too. I can smoke several bowls back to back without much trouble. Meanwhile, even a light VA will make me quite buzzed these days. (I've given it up for well over a year, just starting to dabble in it again)

I haven't had Royal Yacht, but judging by the reviews it packs a wallop. I'd agree that something like that would be needed for a cigarette smoker; if you wanted you could wean yourself off it and gradually come to like weaker tobaccos. Burleys are the big boys though, if you want a dose of Vitamin N.

I remember I smoked a huge bowl of C&D Pennington Gap when I first started the pipe and it just about kicked my ***. Most people don't even consider that strong. I don't tangle with any prominent burley blends ever since! (Thinking about getting 2 oz Prince Albert, but that will just be for a casual cob smoke not a marathon session. lol)

I still smoke cigs... and enjoy pipes. my favorite flavor pipe tobaccos tend to be low in nicotine content - bright/matured VAs, orientals, english blends etc

if you want to be satiated nicotine wise, the simple answer is to look for Burleys blends. They are generally from Kentucky etc and tend to pack a whallopof Nicotine - though not as much as some of the exceptional VAs like ropes/twists/1792

So i'd go pick up some Burleys (among my favorites is GL Pease's Barbary Coast- granted, most english and VA smokers don't like it) but as you are new, you don't have previous palate prejudices and you WILL get your nicotine fix :) Haddo's Delight is another strong nicotine GL pease blend. Burley Cake from Cornell & Diehl so many out there.

eventually you can move onto some fo the more heady VA Nicotine monsters like 1792, the ropes/twists etc.

bwaaahahahaha

good luck quitting Cigs btw!

Yup, what he said!!!! Burleys! though most VAs I smoke for taste, not nicotine, it's the Zimbabwe VA that kick my ***....

I'd probably get dizzy just looking at that stuff. I can safely say that I will never smoke any of the twists/smokes/plugs that you've mentioned, nor Five Brothers or Tambolaka or any of the potent burleys out there. I am pretty cautious when it comes to anything C&D because I find them to be stronger than reviewers indicate. I don't mind smoking a cigar once in a blue moon, but I definitely stay away from cigar leaf because that is another sign of a nicotine whooping in my future.

I primarily enjoy the mild-medium Virginia based ones as far as taste goes. I love latakia for a change of pace, but I find it starts to get too ashy if I smoke it regularly. If I got the same burst of flavour each time I'd constantly smoke English and Balkan blends. Thankfully they are often strong in taste but not in nicotine. It's almost a Catch 22 otherwise, I like tobacco flavour but not the side effects that come with it!

Fridays are Fishtastic!
Why not? I do.

Same here, but not every puff. Only about a quarter of the time. To the OP- get some small clay pipes. As a cigarette smoker, I am used to a smoke break every hour. Those tiny bowl are good for a five minute smoke. I save the briars for lunch and home.

Where would one get these clay pipes? Sometimes I just want a small quick bowl.

I got 3 clays and a pouch of Sir Walter Raliegh from pipesandcigars. Pretty good price, and SWR isn't bad. It is no Sqadron Leader, but it is decent enough that I leave it in my desk in case I run to work without tobacco. I also leave a clay in my desk.

On edit: I just saw your location. I will have that song rattling around in my head today.

Gonna have to check these out. I've only really been using a Missouri Meerschaum with Dunhill Nightcap for a while so I need something new.

Scrawled on a city wall.
