Found these in the basement

These must have belonged to my grandfather, or, I guess maybe one of his brothers or his father possibly.

No idea what they are - haven't done a google search on them, yet. Anyway - figured I'd post up some pics for you straight razor folks.

1. Solingen Made in Germany - Century Cutlery Co. NY. Blade is marked Ghe Prince - or similar.

Nice find, especially given the family history. What are your plans for them? They both look like the might be candidates for restoration.

Not sure yet - I haven't given straight shaving a try yet, so I suppose with some reading, practice and courage I could try to restore one of them and give it a shot.

The solingen has a chip in the blade, but the one marked m jung seems pretty to be in decent condition aside from the spots of rust. Not sure how restoration works exactly but that's what the forums are for, right?

Take the scales off of the orange one right away. You have cell rot there and your blade will be ruined.

Thanks! having a basement is pretty awesome. Lots of weird stuff down there (for instance, there is a scythe - no idea why).

Took the scales off the second one - pin came right out. The scales were made of plastic and these blades must be pretty ancient I think. Anyhow - took some new pictures of it - looks like rust to me but I really don't know about this stuff.

Also the inscription appears to say "SUPERBA" not SUPERB, and it also says it was made in Germany.

btw, will the fact that the other blade (first one pictured in the first post) has a chip in it prevent it from being restored/useable?

Great find. I just got my great uncles hollow ground straight, and my great great grand fathers Wade and Butcher, appears to be a full wedge, over the weekend from my family estate. Both of them have completely shot scales, no chance of restore. The blades on them both look solid and should be able to be brought back to life.

They will definitely be getting sent somewhere for a restore at some point. Family heirloom gear is always special gear to have. Grats.

Thanks, sound like you found some great stuff. I think i'll try to bring these back to life - currently a law student but my undergraduate studies were in visual art/painting and i'm pretty handy with tools. I've refinished wood paneling before and built tons of stuff, so i think i can handle some tedious, but worhtwhile, sanding for a few weeks.
