What's new

For the shaving-stick, face latherers here,

how do you go about doing a 2nd and 3rd pass.

I see how having my uncut whiskers helps generate lather for pass 1, but I am not sure how to generate lather for passes 2 and 3 .

Would I rub the stick on again for passes 2 and 3 ?

Tis a puzzlement.

I usually have enough lather left on my brush from when i loaded it all up on my face, but occasionally I rub a bit more on my face. No shame in that.

So you use the stick like a big crayon into your wet stubble.
Then you face lather with your brush. During this process enough soap transfers to the brush for subsequent passes.

I always get atleast 3 passes from my face from all stick I use, i.e Palmolive, Speick & TABAC
And I have a rather regular sized face.
And I don't use any fancy brushes.
TGN knots or Semogue boar.
But, if you need to, just rub some more on, easy-peasy.
Much easier then to try to add lather with a lathered brush on the puck...messy...

Sorry, I have to edit a bit, TABAC generally gives more lather then that. Maybe for 12 passes, I have never done enough to run out of lather with it...

I start off with a wet face wet the stick a little an vigorously rub the soap on my face. I build a nice thick lather on my face with a wet brush. If the lather is a bit to thick ill spread out the brush splash a little water in the middle and rub all over.I have enough lather left in the brush to do 3.5 passes.

I have a Speick, unused I am embarrassed to say.

You shouldn't have a problem then. I find that with Arko I have to repass the stick to get 3 or more passes, but not with any of the others I have tried. Plus, Speick smells pretty good! :biggrin1:

Same here. not a problem getting enough lather for multiple passes while face lathering.

Same with Arko here. But if you need some more rub some more on your face and go at it! Maybe you're just not lathering long enough to get enough from the product you have/had on your face.

with Mama Bears stick Lime Ice and the $9 Shea brush I have enough lather in the brush for a 2nd and 3rd pass and even then a bunch goes the down sink.

Well, I chickened out.

I was getting out of the shower and couldn't figure how to work the Proraso pre-shave into a face-lathering scheme of things.

I usually rub in the pre-shave, top with lather, work those in well, then 1st pass.

I wonder if the Proraso will get in the way of the shave-stick generating good lather.

Maybe tomorrow without the pre-shave.

Hex, I don't have particularly sensitive skin so don't rely on any pre/post shave products.

I have recently become a big fan of shave sticks, using QED and Valobra recently (Speick and Erasmic waiting in the wings but haven't tried yet). In both cases, they produce more than enough to comfortably get 3-4x passes, including touch up.

I also feel that the action of rubbing the stick on my beard, then allowing it to sit while running my brush under hot water provides for more beard conditioning/prep than my normal routine.

You may not need the extensive prep!

just did a minor expirement with my worst/dryest lathering stick (AU palmolive) got 8 useable passes out of one "faceload" of soap. Speick is a tallow soap, so i wouldn't be surprised to get 10+ useable passes from it

+1 i haven't even bothered with kyle's prep since i started using sticks

I shower shave and face lather using soaps of late but definitely seems like the 2nd pass of lather goes on thinner. I am using Boar so it may be that, or it could be the steam is settling the lather on the brush or less whiskers equals less lather... Still is plenty and gives good cushion so I'm not worried.

You could try loading the brush with the stick. Soak it. Hold the brush with the bristles up and rub the stick in to it. I usually load my face and the brush to make sure I have enough.

I've sensitve skin and with sticks I don't need to use any pre shave, especially with speick, it's very slick and makes the blade glide on the skin like crazy.

As others have mentioned, if you rub enough of the stick on your face the first time (your face should be covered with white bubbly/soapy residue) you will have enough leather on the brush for lots of passes, very often I've enough for 6-10 passes.

One more thing, if you notice that the stick drags on your face and doesn't go on smoothly, wet it in the water and work it into your skin, I've to repeat that around 3-4 times before my face is covered.

Agree... Make sure the tip of the stick is moist so when you are rubbing it on your face you get enough soap.. I usually spend maybe a minute rubbing the stick over my face and sometimes swirl the brushe a couple of times. This leaves me with plenty of lather for several passes and touch ups!

No, it will not get in the way ... I use Proraso Pre-Shave with just about everything. Yesterday's shave, it went on under a coat of Spieck stick for face-lathering, and the two played together quite nicely.
